Unitus CCU awards scholarships
Unitus Community Credit Union, with a branch located at 10555 S.E. Washington St., is dedicated to helping members achieve a higher education.

This year, Unitus has awarded eleven scholarships to graduating high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Each scholarship winner will receive $1,000 toward his or her tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Unitus's 2006 scholarship recipients are Brian Salvador of Aloha, Michael Wafford of Portland, Wesley Loo of Lake Oswego, and Trevor DeLuca of Gresham - all graduating high school seniors. Undergraduate students who received awards are Matthew Boenzli of Albany, Mike Day of Oregon City, Christian Kaneen of Vancouver, RaeAnna Wilson of Wilsonville, and Bethany Annsa of Portland. Graduate students honored are Bryan Szyper and Kyle Kent, both of Portland.

Bethany Annsa was the first recipient of the Unitus Community Involvement scholarship. This year marks the first time the credit union has awarded a scholarship based on a student's involvement, leadership and activities.

If you can move, you can groove
Group Groove™, the latest fitness phenomenon to hit the health and fitness industry, is being offered at Cascade Athletic Clubs in Portland and Gresham.

Participants stomp, flick, wiggle, jiggle, hip hop, snap, shimmy, shake, slide, glide, smile and laugh their way through this 60-minute fitness dance program. They experience a fusion of club, urban and Latin dance styles with motivating, chart-topping hits and retro classic tunes.

Fitness dance programs have been taking the country by storm because of the fun factor associated with them.

Group Groove is a professionally developed program that has extensive research and rigorous testing to ensure a simple, fun and effective exercise experience. New classes are developed every three months to keep the program hot and fresh.

PGE honors local students
These David Douglas High School students were recently presented with PGE Awards for Academic Excellence for their outstanding achievement in completing the State of Oregon Department of Education's Certificate of Advanced Mastery program. Portland General Electric recently recognized 28 Oregon students who have completed the State of Oregon Department of Education's Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) program and four students who received Certificates of Advanced Mastery (CAM). These students, whose parents work at PGE, were presented with PGE Awards for Academic Excellence for their outstanding achievement on Thursday, June 1. This is the sixth year PGE has recognized students who have completed the CIM/CAM program.

"PGE is a strong supporter of public education and youth development," said Carol Dillin, vice president of public policy at PGE. "We are proud to acknowledge these students who have excelled in their studies and to commend them for their hard work."

Dillin said PGE employees and retirees are committed to helping students succeed in the academic arena. From January 2005 through May 2006, PGE employees and retirees have volunteered more than 25,716 hours to classrooms, educational endeavors, after-school programs and athletic teams in Oregon and southwest Washington.

Among the students recognized were Storm Beck and Amanda Kraus of David Douglas High School. Both were awarded CAM honors in Natural Resources. Steve Wong of Reynolds High School earned his CIM.
