SCHOOL CORNER MHCC reopens after winter break All Mt. Hood Community College locations will reopen on Friday, Jan. 2. On Saturday, Jan. 3, the admissions, registration and records office; advising office; bookstore; business office; financial aid office and testing center on the Gresham Campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St., will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. to assist students in registering for winter term classes. Campus tours will begin in the advising office on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Winter term begins the week of Jan. 5. Girls fast pitch softball Register now for spring 2009 girls K-12 fast pitch softball in the David Douglas school district. Learn to make good decisions in avalanche territory Backpackers and winter sports enthusiasts can learn how to move safely through avalanche territory with the new Mt. Hood Community College class, Avalanche Training Level I. Through both classroom and field instruction, students will learn to read the winter mountain terrain, use a framework to make safe decisions and develop a practical, applicable understanding of avalanches. This course adheres to the standards set by the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to take the optional Level I Avalanche Certification exam. This course is going to be a great way of learning safety skills for traveling in the winter mountain environments, class instructor Bryan Anaclerio said. Its a great course to take with friends. Avalanche Training Level I will be held on Wednesdays from 3:10 to 6 p.m., Feb. 11 to March 11, in Room PE108 on MHCCs Gresham campus, 26000 S.E. PHS will welcome class of 2013 A special evening program will be held on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. for all eighth-grade students and their parents at Parkrose High School. Exciting things are happening. Come learn about the myriad of courses in the Honors/Advanced Placement program, elective courses connected to career pathways, athletics opportunities and more. Take a tour of the school and find out whats new. Get information about the forecasting process and how counselors will help students, with parental support, in selecting courses for their freshman year. The staff is proud of the opportunities available for students at Parkrose High School and looks forward to seeing all eighth-graders and their parents. VOLUNTEER Give the gift of reading Become an OASIS tutor and share your love of reading with elementary students from kindergarten through third grade. OASIS will provide the training and materials; you provide the fun. Parents become a volunteer coach The community sports program in the David Douglas School District would not be possible without adults who are willing to volunteer as coaches. Coaches are needed for baseball and basketball. Each coach must pass a criminal background check and attend a free coaching clinic. Handwriting volunteers needed The occupational therapy department at the David Douglas School District is seeking volunteers to support children with additional handwriting practice. Materials and training are provided. Commitment involves working with elementary students for a minimum of 30 minutes once a week. Skills required include handwriting capabilities, the ability to enjoy children and to be able to sit for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. MEETINGS & SEMINARS Service club turns discarded cell phones into emergency tools The Russellville Kiwanis Club collects old cell phones and donates them to an organization that makes them available to individuals in abusive situations. The phones are programmed to dial 9-1-1 without a regular service provider. If you have cell phones to donate, contact Charlie Ross at 503-252-1570 or drop them off at the SnowCap warehouse, Southeast 178th Avenue and Pine Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Russellville Kiwanis meets every Tuesday at the Refectory, 1618 N.E. 122nd Ave., just north of Northeast Halsey Street. from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. You are invited to visit with them some Tuesday and consider becoming a member. The group will pay for your first lunch. Russellville Kiwanis supports a number of community programs including SnowCap Community Charities, Doernbecher Childrens Cancer Unit, Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Individuals with Handicaps, DayBreak Family Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, Shepherds Door and others. Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Would you like to feel more confident as a parent? Would you like to have more fun parenting? David Douglas School District will present a six-week parent training program designed by the Love and Logic Institute, Inc. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 7. Sessions will be held at Ventura Park School, 145 S.E. 117th Ave., on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Feb. 11. These seminars are free. Day care will be available at each session. This course is designed to give parents practical skills that can be used immediately. Get answers to many common parenting questions for children of all ages. Families will receive free resources and materials to support the program at home. This class is limited to 15 families (two adults max per family per session), and parents must commit to at least five of the six sessions. Call 503-262-4499 to register. Save energy, save money Representatives of the Energy Trust of Oregon will be guests at the monthly city of Portland Bureau of Development Services Lunch and Learn Brown Bag Seminar. They will offer recommendations to make your home more energy efficient, provide energy saving tips, share information regarding Energy Trust of Oregon cash incentives, discuss code requirements for energy improvements and answer your questions.
