The Riverdale School Board announced the hiring of Michael Taylor as the interim superintendent of Riverdale School District.

Taylor has more than 35 years educational experience as a teacher, principal and superintendent. He comes most recently from ACE Academy, where he was the director. Taylor is also an adjunct instructor at Concordia University, and was the superintendent at Parkrose and Ontario school districts.

Taylor's primary responsibilities include assisting the Riverdale School District in hiring a permanent superintendent and grade school principal; overseeing development and presentation of the budget for the 2013-2014 school year; providing guidance and support to the district leadership team and staff; supporting development of a new, state-mandated, teacher evaluation instrument; conducting an organizational needs assessment to assist the board in evaluating the district's needs; supervising ongoing committee work and planning; and ensuring that Riverdale is up-to-date with state reporting. He joined the district on Jan. 7 and will serve through June 30, 2013.

Taylor, who became interim president of the Parkrose Business Association in October, and was elected to a full-year term in December, was asked how the Riverdale job affects his ability to serve in Parkrose.

“I have made arrangements with my board to continue to carry out my responsibilities with PBA and I plan to do so. This tightens up my schedule, but I have always worked better under a little bit of pressure so I am confident it will all work out,” he said in an email.

Each year, Mt. Hood Community College recognizes outstanding part-time faculty for their contributions to teaching and learning - one of MHCC's core values - along with community engagement and resource development. The 2012 Part-time Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching goes to Zach Hudson and Andy Gurevich.

Hudson is a developmental reading and writing instructor in MHCC's Academic Literacy program and recently began contributing to Advancement Via Individual Determination. MHCC is just one of two colleges in the Pacific Northwest to offer AVID. Several local high schools offer AVID, which features a unique set of teaching strategies and lesson plans.

Written nominations praised Hudson for developing the special skills, strength and dedication to help his students succeed in college. Hudson is an accomplished author of both scholarly work and fiction. Recently, he wrote a children's book, “The Banjo,” which is illustrated by his father, Jere Hudson.

The second award was presented to Gurevich, during his world literature class. Gurevich teaches many topics in two divisions, English and Social Science, and consistently gets high rankings from his students. He has an amazing breadth of knowledge that enhances all his classes, but his scholarship in the history of world religions adds depth to his teaching of world literature, according to the nominations.
