EVENTS
Create a lead-free, draft-free home
The Community Energy Project provides education and hands-on training to help area residents maintain healthy, more livable homes, control utility costs and conserve natural resources.

There will be a free lead-poisoning prevention workshops on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. This family friendly workshop focuses on effects of lead, testing methods and how to protect your family from lead poisoning. Participants receive a free kit of testing and cleaning materials worth $30. Please call 503-284-6827 to register or e-mail lead@communityenergyproject.org.

Free weatherization workshops are set for Tuesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shaver Elementary School, 3701 N.E. 131st Place, and Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Davis SUN School, 19501 N.E. Davis St. These workshops focus on simple, do-it-yourself draft-stopping techniques to lower your energy bill and make your home more comfortable. Learn how to install materials such as internally mounted vinyl storm window kits, door weather stripping and more.

Mothers, sons and Oz
The annual David Douglas High Mother/Son Dinner will include a performance of the high school performing arts department presentation of "The Wizard of Oz." This special event is hosted by the David Douglas Dads Club and will

take place on Thursday, Dec. 6 in the DDHS South Cafeteria, 1500 S.E. 130th Ave. Souvenir photos will be taken between 5 and 7:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The musical will start at 7:30 p.m. Dinner-only tickets are $7 per person. Tickets for dinner and the musical are $15 for adults and $11 for students.

Historic farmhouse announces heritage tours
Step into the late 1800s and early 1900s to learn how people in our historical farming communities lived. The historic Zimmerman House, 17111 N.E. Sandy Blvd., will offer special guided tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Admission is $3 for those 12 and older.

Isobel Zimmerman, who lived in the family home until her death in 1992, was a math and science teacher at Southeast Portland's Franklin High School between 1930 and 1961. Memorabilia from her long career will be on display.

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETINGS
Carol Williams, Parkrose Heights Neighborhood Association chair, extends holiday greetings to her neighbors. While there is no meeting in December, she would like Heights residents to know there will be a board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and a general membership meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Guest speakers at the general meeting will be Justin Douglas of the Portland Development Commission, Lore Wintergreen and Tom Rousculp on the Safe Routes to School Program and crime prevention representative Jenni Benheisel. The Sharing Carrot: It's a cold winter day and food is scarce, yet Rabbit finds not just one but two carrots. Rabbit decides to share his carrot with his good friend Lamby, who in turn wants to share it with Donkey and so on. See what Rabbit decides to do with the carrot when it shows up back at his doorstep. Fun and winter singing for all. Free tickets for seating will be available 30 minutes prior to the program. Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 7 to 7:45 p.m.

Teen Lounge and Homework Center: Use library computers, get homework help, or just do your homework and listen to music. For teens in grades 6-12. Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., except Dec. 13 and 27.

Read to the Dogs SM: Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a therapy dog. The dogs and handlers are from the DoveLewis Animal Assisted Therapy and Education Program. Registration is required. Call 503-988-5386. Sunday, Dec. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Dance Dance Revolution Tournament: Strut your stuff. Get down. Do your thing. Kick it. Get stylin'. In other words, have fun and win prizes in the first-ever library DDR Tournament. Prizes include $10 Regal Entertainment Group gift cards for the highest score in each skill class at every participating library and $40 Game Crazy gift cards for highest scores in the county.
