Gateway area hair stylist changes business approach
“I am changing the way I do business.”

Those are the words of Warren Bauer, owner and operator of Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists, celebrating 50 years in business in the Gateway area.

The full-service hair styling salon is located at 11424 N.E. Halsey St. It not only features Paul Mitchell products but also is one of the line’s most highly rated salons.

In an exclusive interview with the Memo, Bauer explained that from this point on, new stylists at Mr. Oscar will be employees, as opposed to the more traditional setup of stylists leasing salon stations. Bauer is creating what he calls the Mr. Oscar Design Team. After graduation from styling school, new employees will enter an apprenticeship program at Mr. Oscar and train to offer the highest quality service possible.

“We’re taking Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists to the next level,” he said.

New employees at Mr. Oscar will be offered a benefits package that includes medical and dental coverage. Bauer said that another feature offered will be continuing education, including the opportunity to travel to Paul Mitchell hair styling conventions.

Bauer also informed the Memo that the Paul Mitchell Corporation opened a new beauty school in downtown Portland, called Paul Mitchell, The School. Bauer said that since Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists is known as a top Paul Mitchell salon, a mutually beneficial alliance is being created between the downtown beauty school and Mr. Oscar to have qualified graduates referred directly to Mr. Oscar for employment.

In other news from the salon, the Paul Mitchell Corporation has nominated Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists for the prestigious Salon Entrepreneur of the Year Award as part of the 2008 Global Salon Business Award.

Credit union supports local nonprofits
Unitus Community Credit Union has kicked off its sixth annual Holiday Supply Drive. Over the last five years, the drive has collected over 10,000 items and raised thousands of dollars for Unitus’ community partners. This year’s drive will support four local nonprofit organizations throughout the Portland and Salem area.

Unitus is asking members and employees to donate canned food, baby formula, children’s toys and warm clothing and blankets at any branch of Unitus through Dec. 14. Unitus will deliver donations to SnowCap Community Charities in Portland, Clackamas Women’s Services in Clackamas, Good Neighbor Center in Tigard, and Helping Hands in Salem.

In addition to physical donations, each branch of Unitus will also be donating $5 to these same organizations for each checking or savings account opened between now and Dec. 14.

The annual Holiday Supply Drive is a special way for Unitus to connect and give back to the communities it serves. “Donations from the Unitus Holiday [Supply] Drive help us fill our shelves and provide needed food and supplies to those who would otherwise go without this holiday season,” said Lorie Wageman, assistant director of SnowCap Community Charities.

The local Unitus branch is located at 10555 S.E. Washington St., near Mall 205.

Hair styling, nail care now at the Color Box
The Color Box Salon, open since March, is a small, comfortable salon located at 10035 N.E. Glisan St.

The operators of the Color Box believe “it’s like coming home to get your hair or nails done.” One visit and you’ll see why: the business in located in a cozy building that used to be a house, and the hair and nail stylists are friendly and experienced.

All four stylists came from Loving’s Salon just up the street on Northeast 102nd Avenue.

Hairdresser Joni Scheel has worked in the Gateway area for 23 years, the last 13 spent at Loving’s. She told the Memo that she enjoys all areas of hairdressing, including coloring, permanents, hair cutting and hair styling. She told us that she’s very excited about the new shop, referring to it as “a nice little place, very comfortable, cozy.” She added that she likes working in the intimate environment at the Color Box. “(It’s) more personable.”

Tricia Zerufael has worked in the Gateway area for 20 years, the last 16 at Loving’s. She enjoys all areas of hairdressing and also does facial waxing.

Angela Bell was at Loving’s for nine years, a hairdresser specializing in coloring, but expert also in cutting and styling hair. Bell does what she calls “special occasion hair,” for weddings, parties and the like.

Charity Keeney was at Loving’s for almost 10 years. Visit the Color Box for her nail expertise, including manicures, pedicures and acrylic nails. She enjoys her work, especially since the Gateway area is where she grew up and attended David Douglas schools. Interestingly, she now drives a school bus for the district.

The Color Box offers gift certificates and takes all major credit cards. Keeney and Bell work Monday through Saturday with varying hours. Zerufael works Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Scheel works Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The telephone number is 503-255-8400. Appointments are recommended.
