Championship trophies land at Columbia Christian, Parkrose and David Douglas

This regular Memo feature celebrates the successes of area high school students and teams.

Academic All Stars
The Dairy Farmers of Oregon recognizes athletic teams that earn a 3.0 GPA or higher. David Douglas girls swim team topped the list of Mid-county schools with a 3.71 cumulative GPA. Other David Douglas teams recognized were cheer (3.38), girls basketball (3.38), boys swim (3.34), dance and drill (3.17) and wrestling (3.01).

Columbia Christian girls basketball made the list with a 3.56 along with boys basketball (3.31).

City Christian girls basketball qualified with a 3.28. The boys team had a 3.32.

Madison boys basketball had a 3.13 GPA.

Parkrose girls swimmers led the way among Bronco teams with a 3.39, followed by boys swim (3.37), dance and drill (3.30), and girls basketball (3.16).

Both Portland Christian basketball teams made the list, the girls with 3.53 and the boys with 3.47.

Reynolds girls swim team earned a 3.27, while the Raiders cheer squad had a 3.06.

Basketball-boys
Valley League champions Columbia Christian rolled into the 1A tournament as the three seed. They beat Camas Valley 67-26 at home before heading to Baker for bracket play. There the Knights trounced Triangle Lake 97-38, Powder Valley 82-48 and number one seeded Horizon Christian out of Hood River 68-49 for the state title.

Boys basketball teams from David Douglas and Reynolds qualified for the 6A state tournament and teams that placed sent both home.

Reynolds got off to a good start with a 39-34 win over Grants Pass, but the Raiders were sent home by fifth-place Jesuit.

Eventual third place winner, South Salem, turned the Scots back in the first round 71-59.

The Senators of Madison High beat third seeded Mountain View 58-55 in the first round of the 5A tournament and sixth-seeded Sherwood 55-46 in the second round. They then lost to state runner up Churchill 68-50 and West Albany 76-74, to bring the fifth-place trophy home.

Basketball-girls
Portland Christian earned a spot in 2A state bracket play by virtue of a 43-38 win over Weston-McEwen but ran into eventual state champion Regis in its first game in Pendleton. They lost that game 42-31 but bounced back against Pilot Rock 52-35. They came out of the consolation bracket with sixth place after a loss to Union.

City Christian lost 47-39 to Perrydale out of Amity in 1A first-round play.

Cheerleading
A confident David Douglas team coached by Amber Cowgill marched into the 5A/6A state championships and claimed the second-place trophy.

Chess
The Parkrose Shaver Tiger chess team took second place at the Region 5 Chess for Success tournament. Two players, Mikaele Phillips and Nathaniel Shaffer, tied for first place in individual play. They and teammate Game Maldanado advanced to the state tournament last month.

Dance/Drill
Perennial powerhouse Parkrose claimed another state title at the Oregon Schools Activities Association championships last month. The Elite place first in the show category. Parkrose dancer Hanna Madden took fifth in the drill competition.

Mock Trial
Early last month the Parkrose Mock Trial team advanced to the state finals as Multnomah County representatives along with teams from Lincoln, St. Mary's and Catlin Gabel. A couple of weeks later, they walked out of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Court House as ninth-place finishers among more than 50 teams statewide. They beat Jesuit and Grants Pass before losing to eventual state winner, West LiTeam members are Bailey Golar, Cameron Tennyson, Hannah Hamling, Tyler Sirokman, Sam Shepard, Selena Johnson, Emily Sarich, Nate Frary, Catherine Ngo, Melina Hunt, Sierra Stallings, Josiah Abney, Danny Lu and Max Denning. Katie Lorenz, Aaron Brown, Jennifer Martin, John Hickey and Richard English coach them.

Swimming
Both the David Douglas girls and boys swim teams finished sixth in state. Individuals who placed in the top 12 are:

Third place-boys 200-yard freestyle relay-Lucky Le, Jonathan Merkley, Ray Miller and Sam Redwine-Hixson; third place-50-yard freestyle, Lucky Le; fourth place-boys 400-yard freestyle relay-Lucky Le, Jonathan Merkley, Ray Miller and Sam Redwine-Hixson; fourth place-100-yard freestyle, Lucky Le; eighth place-200-yard freestyle, Ray Miller; eighth place-100-yard butterfly, Ray Miller.

Fourth place-girls 200-yard freestyle relay-Fernanda Rodriguez, Alina Bibik, Pamela Kennedy and Hao Nguyen; fifth place-girls 200-yard medley relay Alina Bibik, Fernanda Rodriguez, Elizabeth Fryer and Pamela Kennedy; seventh place-500-yard freestyle, Elizabeth Fryer; eighth place-200-yard freestyle, Elizabeth Fryer; eighth place-girls 400-yard freestyle relay Alina Bibik, Elizabeth Fryer, Pamela Kennedy and Hao Nguyen; ninth place-100-yard breaststroke, Fernanda Rodriguez;10th place-50-yard freestyle, Hao Nguyen; 10th place-100-yard backstroke, Alina Bibik; 12th place-100-yard freestyle, Hao Nguyen.

Wrestling
Defending state and special district 2 6A champions David Douglas sent a strong contingent of wrestlers to the state tournament this year. Among them, regional champions Tristin Molinari and Osawaru Odighizuwa. Odighizuwa went unbeaten to claim the state title at 220 lbs. Rick Molinari placed fourth at 145 lbs. Other Scots wrestlers who qualified were Andrew Curry (106 lbs.), Quentin Jamieson (113 lbs.), Mamed Razatdinov (138 lbs.) and Tyrrell Young (182 lbs.). The team placed fifth. Ron Holyoak coaches them.

Ryan Wheeless (132 lbs.), Kyeanna Henry and Josh Reyes (138 lbs.) all won their weight class at districts to advance to the OSAA state championship tournament last month along with fellow Parkrose Broncos Trevor Wonderly (113 lbs.), Ray Hernandez (126 lbs.), Steven Ho (152 lbs.) and Hunter Sexsmith (220 lbs.). Henry capped her high school wrestling career with her fourth state title. Reyes claimed his third-two with Parkrose and one while attending David Douglas.
