ACTIVITIES and CELEBRATIONS
Groundbreaking set for new park
Touted as the newest park in the Portland Parks & Recreation system, construction on Loowit View Park (formerly referred to as Beech Park) on Northeast 131st Place begins with a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday, June 4, from 11 a.m. until noon. Community members are invited to adjacent Shaver Elementary, 3701 N.E. 131st Place, to hear guest speakers and share a celebratory cake.
This 16-acre site in the Argay Terrace neighborhood will feature a soccer field and basketball court, accessible play and picnic areas, parking, community gardens, a fenced off-leash dog area and foot and bike paths with expansive views—including a majestic vista of Loowit (the Native American name for the iconic Mt. St. Helens).
According to the Parks & Rec website, “The park’s name helps to honor the indigenous people who first lived on the land and to recognize the overall history of the area.”
The construction timeline for the park schedules a grand opening for the new park in the fall of 2017.
