In team sports, the individual position most crucial to success is quarterback. Superior quarterback play wins championships. Which is why it will be interesting to see how Parkrose football responds this year after graduating two-year starting QB Jonathan Boland. With his running, passing, and, just as important, leadership skills, the charismatic Boland led the Broncos to back-to-back wining seasons, their first in four decades.
Third-year Head Coach Maurice France said he’s going with junior Cedric Brooks to replace Boland. France said the 6’3 Clackamas High School transfer shows promise. “He’s just a bigger QB [than Boland]; speed is about the same, both of their abilities are the same,” France said. “Jon just makes reads faster than Cedric, but it’s his first year pretty much at the helm for a whole season.” He added, “Where Jon went around you, Cedric wants to go through you; I gotta figure how I’m gonna keep him healthy all year.”
In addition, France said he’s concerned with team leadership. Seniors Vincent Vy and Chris Wilson show game leadership, but France is looking for leaders during practice and training.
Despite having only five defensive starters returning, France believes his defense can stop anybody. “We were talking about it last night. We actually look better this year.”
