Regarding Parkrose park

Dear Editor,

I was pleased to see the large article “Parkrose park...” in the November issue.  It’s exciting that we’ll eventually, finally, have a real park in this neighborhood, especially for small children, and the community garden part of the proposal is fantastic!

It was disturbing to me, however, that I was so badly misquoted.  My late husband, who worked for another major dairy, bought most of his dairy products at Senn’s Dairy, the original occupant of this site, and was furious that such a fine business should be forced off the property and into bankruptcy.   To honor the family left after Mr. Senn’s death, I’m hoping the community will embrace the idea of naming the park after the Senn family: Senn’s Park.

Apparently, this is mainly a grass-roots effort, there being no money in the city budget to actually turn this designated site into a park.  I would urge families and local businesses to get involved in helping the park become reality, and soon...it’s long overdue.

Cover girl says thank you

Thank You so much for the wonderful feature story about me in the Mid-County Memo in November. The interview with Don Weston was great. He was wonderful to talk with. My K-Mart friends have been in to tell me they saw the article. My neighbors and friends have called - even my minister at Crossroads Church called. What a great gift you gave to an 82-year old lady. It has been the highlight of my life. Again, many thanks. God bless your life.

Evelyn (Steigerwald) Benson

P.S. I was raised in the Hollywood area. I went to Grant High school. My father’s business, the Steigerwald Dairy Company had the largest milk bottle in the world on the business’ facade, (It became the 7-Up bottle located at the corner of Northeast 43rd and Sandy Blvd.) I grew up in these surroundings, but now live in Parkrose. January 1, 1919 is my birthday. I have Snow skied, water-skied, gone snorkeling, skydiving, hot air ballooning, and have taken a helicopter ride. Coming up next is the ride on a back of a Harley-Davidson.

The Memo has a fan in PHAN

Thank you for your diligence and efforts toward the very satisfactory completion of the “Welcome to Gateway” sign at the Halsey/Wielder split. The addition of our name appears to have been planned all along. It looks very professional. We are very happy with the results.

We thank you as well, for your coverage of our neighborhood events, problems, life, and letters. It is good to know we have such intelligent support.

Best Regards,

The board members of the Parkrose Heights Assoc. of Neighbors (PHAN),

President Carol Williams, Vice-President Grace Fitzgerald, Recording Secretary Ann Croze, Treasurer Frank Johnston, Corresponding Secretary Ellen Wong, Crime Prevention Lou Evans, Parks Doris Larson, Planning/Zoning John Stockem, Traffic  David Burney, PHAN Newsletter Editor Doug Croze, Board Member at large A.J. Limbrick, and PHAN Contact Person Ruby Osborn.

Editor’s Note: Mid-county Memo publisher/owner Tim Curran, in his role as a Gateway Area Business Association board member, coordinated the addition of the PHAN & Russell Neighborhood Association names to the “Welcome to Gateway” sign.
