New students invited to MHCC orientation
Students planning to attend Mt. Hood Community College in the fall are invited to a new student orientation session. This half-day event is designed to teach new students how to get the most out of their college experience. The orientation session will provide opportunities to meet new and current students, tour the campus, meet with faculty and advisers, win prizes and learn about college resources.

Family members are also invited to attend a special session designed to explain what kind of support and understanding their student will need to succeed in school.

The new student orientation is set for Tuesday, Sept. 18. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., and orientation runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A free lunch will be provided. Free childcare will be available during orientation. Advance childcare registration is required.

Orientation will be held in the gymnasium at Mt. Hood Community College at 26000 S.E. Stark St. For more information or to register online, visit www.mhcc.edu/fye and select New Student Orientation. To make reservations by phone, call 503-491-6965.

Learn to succeed at college
Mt. Hood Community College will again offer its successful HD 100 College Success course this fall, tuition free to all new students. This course is great for students who are making the transition from high school to college or for those who have been out of school for a while.

The course introduces students to strategies for success, including library orientation, educational planning, self-management and working with others in a cooperative environment. Students not only get to meet other students, but also a caring faculty or staff person with whom they can connect throughout their time at the college.

This is a one-credit course which can be used for elective and transfer credit. Classes are available evenings, weekends and before fall term. An extra bonus is a grand prize drawing to be held at the New Student Orientation Day luncheon on Sept. 18. Students who attend the orientation and sign up for HD 100 have a chance to win a full-term tuition waiver for winter 2008, provided they complete the HD 100 course with at least a C grade.

This course has been lauded nationwide for helping students stay in college. For more information on the course, call 503-491-7432 or register online at www.mhcc.edu. You can also register in person at the Student Services Center during the summer from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, or after Labor Day during weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
