Unique cocktails, varied menu offered at new sports bar
What is a Hawgarita anyway? Turns out it’s a slushy cocktail found only at Boss Hawg’s Bar ‘N Grill on Northeast 102nd Avenue just north of Glisan Street. Owner Brad Tanner is credited with settling on the ingredients, but manager Randi Mayo says she perfected the recipe. A combination of tequila, flavored rum and fruit liqueurs blended with fruit purée and juices, the entire concoction is frozen and mixed in an ice cream type machine that allows bartenders to dispense on demand.

However, there is more to Boss Hawg’s than this signature cocktail. The menu boasts a variety of selections that include appetizers, salads, sandwiches, full dinners and generous, half-pound burgers. Mayo stresses that they use fresh, local ingredients wherever possible and prepare menu items fresh daily.

While there is a definite sports theme, Boss Hawg’s strives to provide a comfortable lunchtime atmosphere during the day and an inviting social setting for the younger crowd in the evenings.

There are pool tables and twice a week card players can get in on Texas Hold’em tournaments. And Boss Hawg’s is, according to Mayo, “NASCAR friendly”.

Football fans will enjoy “Crazy Larry’s Monday Night Football” featuring a $2 all-you-can-eat buffet and raffle prizes throughout the game. Raffle tickets sell two for $1. All proceeds benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Sponsored by Thrifty Auto Supply, prizes are awarded every few minutes and include items for sports fans and car enthusiasts.

Open since early June, Tanner and Mayo are working hard to create a great food destination in a comfortable atmosphere. They are open 365 days a year until 2:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday Boss Hawg’s opens at 11 a.m. On Sundays they open at 9 a.m. and offer a breakfast special for $3 that includes biscuits and gravy, eggs, hash browns and either sausage links or bacon.

Check it out for yourself. Boss Hawg’s Bar N Grill is located at 617 N.E. 102nd Ave. The phone number is 503-252-4647.

Manning Insurance Agency makes a move
We’ve got news from Kelly Manning, the State Farm Insurance agent at Manning Insurance Agency Inc.

The business moved to 11157 N.E. Halsey St. in the Gateway area from across the street. The business made the move in November. The State Farm office was located in the former site for 30 years, Manning said.

To be sure, Manning Insurance Agency offers a wide variety of insurance services. We’ll let agent Manning tell the story.

“Historically,” Manning explained, “State Farm has offered auto, home, life and health insurance. That’s what we’re known for. But in addition, State Farm is now offering several new lines,” she said. Those new lines bring in financial services, including investment products that can “help people plan for their future,” she said. Those investment products include mutual funds, along with variable life insurance and annuities.

“We’ve also begun offering bank products through the State Farm Bank,” she said. Specialized products such as long-term care insurance are also offered.

The insurance office staff numbers four, with one of those staff members a bilingual Spanish and English speaking person.

Office hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

And here’s a bit of interesting news: Manning was a Portland Rose Festival queen in 1988. Manning has two boys: Chance, who is 2 years old, and Reece, who is 8 months old.

“So kids are welcome here,” she said. “We’re kid friendly.”

New owners take helm at Menlo Park sports bar
Step into the cool darkness of the Paradise Sports Bar and you will notice the big screen projector TV as well as a number of smaller screens throughout the venue. These are pretty typical of sports bars. Less typical, are the three aquariums that lend a calm, soothing element to the atmosphere.

Iyaz and Elaine Saeed purchased the business located at 12423 N.E. Glisan St. in Menlo Park Plaza in June. They bring their familiarity with the community (they also own the Glisan St. Pub on Northeast 80th Avenue and Glisan Street) and their business acumen to this venture.

Iyaz Saeed served 27 years in the Pakistan military, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He and his wife Elaine are active volunteers in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Paradise Sports Bar serves beer and wine, offers occasional live music performances and hosts Texas Hold’em tournaments. The bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. The phone number is 503-253-3323.
