You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. Our deadline for the November issue is Monday, Oct. 16.

Increased identity theft protections now in effect
To the editor:
Each year thousands of Oregonians become victims of identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Oregon is ranked 13th in the nation for this crime, and with our large population the Portland area is a prime target for identity thieves. Victims of identity theft will encounter, among other outcomes, damaged credit scores, which can take months — or even years — to repair. However, Oregonians now have new tools that they can use to protect themselves from identity theft.

During the 2007 legislative session, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 583, which is the Oregon Consumer Identity Theft Protection Act. The act became effective on Oct. 1. As of that date every Oregonian will be able to place a security freeze on his or her credit file maintained by one of the three credit reporting agencies. In addition, SB 583 requires businesses to notify customers if computer files containing personal information have been subject to a security breach. If anyone has questions about any of the information contained in SB 583, please contact the Oregon Division of Finance and Corporate Securities at www.dfcs.oregon.gov or by phone at 503-378-4100.

Lastly, more and more Oregonians are becoming victims of identity theft over the Internet. OnGuardOnline at www.onguardonline.gov provides practical tips to help you guard against Internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information. You can also take a test to learn how to avoid becoming a victim of phishing, spam, spyware and other online scams. If you have any questions or comments relating to identity theft or other issues, please contact me at rep.jackiedingfelder@state.or.us or by phone at 503-493-2804.
