Andrea Bontemps, the new owner and operator of Panda at Parkrose, formerly Parkrose Day Care Center, is enjoying the neighborly feel of the Parkrose and Maywood Park community. The new center opened earlier this year.

“We feel really welcomed here,” she told the Memo recently, “and after just a few months, [we] feel right at home.”

Panda at Parkrose, one of four Andi Panda Child Care centers, is located at 10339 N.E. Prescott St., on Northeast 102nd Avenue across from Prescott Elementary School.

The program features what the center calls a learn-by-play sensory integration curriculum named Teaching Moments. It is licensed for approximately 30 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old.

“We value diversity,” an official release from the center said, “and hire for diversity. As such we feel that we can serve our ever-changing and also very diverse community.”

Bontemps also owns Andi Panda Child Care centers at 232 S.E. 80th Ave., Panda at Webster in North Portland and Panda at Alberta/Child Center for the Arts located just off of Northeast Alberta Street.

The Panda at Parkrose center offers four languages: English, Spanish, Russian and American Sign Language. All infants over the age of 6 months are talked to, sung to, signed to and read to in any of these languages. Children have a large outdoor playground available, along with a covered porch for year-round play. Sensory tables, climbing opportunities, a playhouse and bikes await the children at recess time.

Bontemps is herself a busy mother of twin 7-year-old girls and a teenage daughter. She volunteers with Les Femmes, and is a chairwoman for the Debutante annual ball. She’s also a member of several African-American associations and is a strong believer in community service, not only her own but also that the young women she mentors.

Bontemps has been providing childcare in the Portland metropolitan area for 15 years.

Bontemps has extended an invitation for readers of the Memo to visit the new Panda at Parkrose childcare center for tours and enrollment information or to call the center at 503-252-5105.
