Alley and his staff invite everyone to help celebrate (continued)

In 1981, at a hospital Christmas party, Santa Claus asks Dr. Leo Freiermuth, on staff at Woodland Park from 1963 to 2000, if he was a good boy that year
In March 1963, A. E. “Gene” Brim (1930 - 2002), Woodland Park administrator for 18 years, speaks
at the dedication of a new wing at the hospital.
In 1967, Nurse Marty (Roslak) Quiceno adjusts a heart monitor. Today, Quiceno is Nurse Manager of Intensive Care at Woodland Park.
Since the birth of Woodland Park Hospital in November 1962 there have been many firsts. As I flipped through the scrapbook put together and maintained by Alley’s right hand, Janet (Vogel) Ott, herself an employee for over 25 years, it was amazing to see how often Woodland Park was ahead of its time.

In addition, Woodland Park set records back in May 1963 with 25 babies born. In June 1963, Woodland Park was the first all disposable products hospital to operate in the Pacific Northwest. Woodland Park on a charter basis, participated in the founding of the Federation of Oregon Hospitals. Woodland Park had the first Federal Aviation Administration approved heli-stop in the greater Portland metro area. Woodland Park was the first hospital in the area to build a major wing, which was completely carpeted, including patient care areas.

The first arrival in the new Obstetrics Unit that opened in 1968 was Jeff Dennis Simmons, born to Delores and Russell Simmons. Jeff’s parents attended Reynolds High School. At the time of son Jeff’s arrival, his father Rusty was serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam. Mother Delores received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Woodland Park and wonderful care for both herself and 7-pound, 10-ounce son.

Of the first ten babies born at Woodland Park, Richard Charles Brady, born Dec. 10, 1962 was number seven, weighing in at 9 pounds, 12 1/2 ounces. Richard was also the seventh child born to his family. The Brady family had lived in the neighborhood for the past 23 years when Richard was born. Father Brady was a teacher at Marcus Whitman School in the Portland School District.

Alley and his staff invite everyone to help celebrate Woodland Park Hospital’s 40th Anniversary. Throughout the week of November 4th, 2002, there will be events and activities for all. Share stories and hospital history, reminisce and reunite with old friends and maybe make new ones. On Nov. 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. a birthday celebration with cake and punch for all will be served.

Alley wishes to express his gratitude to the community for their ongoing support.

“I want to thank the community for their support over the past forty years,” he emphasized.

Alley also wishes to convey that Woodland Park’s mission and vision for the future is to provide high quality inpatient and outpatient care at competitive prices that also generate a reasonable return to investors.

“Aligned with our employees, physicians and other health care professionals and related organizations,” he contended, “Woodland Park Hospital will become an even busier, successful 209 bed general acute care hospital. A hospital that received national recognition as a top 100 hospital for delivering high quality medical, surgical and behavioral health services to the communities we serve.”

Woodland Park Hospital is located at 10300 N.E. Hancock St. For more information on hospital programs and services call 503-257-5678.
