Midland offers free classes and activities
The Midland Library, located at 805 S.E. 122nd Ave., offers many free activities for adults and families. Library hours are: Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Monday. In November, weekly events include computer and Internet classes and story times. There will also be many special events. For more information on any of the listed programs or to pre-register for a free class, please call the library at 503-988-5392.

• Story Stop: Listen to stories almost every day. Children newborn to 6 years old and their adults are invited to stop by the library for a short, daily program of fun stories. This program is held on Tuesday through Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

• Book Babies: Storytimes for children newborn to 1 year with adult will be held on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. through Tuesday, Nov. 19.

• Tiny Tots: Storytimes for children 1 to 2 years with adult will be held Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. through Wednesday, Nov. 20.

• Toddler Storytime: Storytimes for children aged 2 to 3 years with adult will be held on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. through Thursday, Nov. 21.

• Preschool Storytime: Storytimes for children aged 3 to 6 years with adult will be held on Fridays at 10:15 a.m. through Friday, Nov 22.

• Tapestry of Tales Family Matinee: This performance for children and families features Kathryn Windham and Doug Banner, two of the finest storytellers in the nation. Everyone in the family will enjoy this performance on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 3 to 4 p.m.

• Train Storytime: Celebrate National Model Railroad Month with stories about trains. Participants can enjoy crafts and receive a pass to ride the Oregon Zoo’s scenic zoo train. This will be offered twice, on Thursday, Nov. 14 and Friday, Nov. 15, both at 10:30 a.m.

• Snow Days: A cold day is the perfect time to cuddle up for stories and songs with Anne-Louise Sterry. This class for preschoolers and their parents or caregivers will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m.

• Pajama Time: Put on your pajamas, grab a bedtime buddy and join in for stories, songs and fun on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

• Spot the Dog: Join Spot the Dog during Children’s Book Week for great dog stories! Bring a camera and take a photo of your child with Spot. This storytime will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Learn something new
A variety of classes are offered this month at the Gregory Heights Library, 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Gregory Heights Library hours are Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Monday. • Holiday Card Making: Experiment with paper textures, color and shape placement, mixed media, collage, and stamping with artist Vanessa Hughes. Create your own hand-made card for the holidays. This class, recommended for children 6 years and older, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m.

• Homework Helpers: Homework Helpers are trained volunteers who give students one-on-one help finding the books and information they need to complete homework assignments in the library. Homework Helpers are available from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays.

• Cyber Seniors Computer Class: This series of three classes is designed for seniors who are interested in learning the very basics of how to use a computer. Learn to use a mouse, search the Internet, and send and receive e-mail. Each session will consist of one hour of instruction and one hour of practice. The sessions will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, Tuesday, Nov. 12, and Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required.

• Stretching Retirement Dollars for a Long Life: Will your retirement savings last your lifetime? Discover solid strategies for making the most of what you have. This program is presented by Stan Hymel, Certified Financial Planner, and sponsored by The Library Foundation. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. To pre-register, please call 503-223-4008.

• Book Discussion Group: Engage in stimulating conversation about books and get to know your neighbors. Come and exchange perspectives about characters, plot and more! Call for titles. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.
