The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in Miller Hall at United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. The Russell Neighborhood Association will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Shepherds Door, 13207 N.E. Halsey St. This is a special meeting to visit the site and meet the people who will be living and working there. Shepards Door is a six-phase program for a minimum length of 9 months and a maximum of 24 months. The program is focused on homeless women with children and provides them a consistent and positive living situation while they prepare themselves and their children to become members of the greater community. School age children will be transitioned into area schools when they are ready. The completed site will include 3 play areas with equipment, (including a small basketball court), a large kitchen, 44 individual bedroom family units, a camping area for overnight campouts, counseling rooms, classrooms, and other features. The entire site and its building elements will be used for teaching as well as life experiences. A bus shelter will be placed at the site by Tri-Met in order to provide transit availability for residents. Limited, on site parking is provided for staff and program visitors. The meeting will consist of a hardhat walking tour of the new buildings at Shepherds Door that are nearing exterior completion and is open to the public. A general discussion period will follow. Construction has been exceptionally fast and the timeline for completion of the project has shortened. Current plans call for 6 families to begin the first residential program in mid-January, 2003. It is expected that 50% of the families will be fully enrolled by the end of year one, with 100% enrollment by the end of year two.
