Human Solutions, an organization devoted to giving hardworking families the opportunities they deserve, is hosting Revel for a Cause, a May 16th fundraiser, at the Holiday Inn Airport Convention Center that will have Portland’s community leaders swinging.

This entertaining night will also feature both a silent and live auction in an effort to raise funds so that Human Solutions can continue its work helping low-income and homeless families empower themselves by providing affordable housing, support services and job training.

Jean DeMaster, Human Solutions executive director, said, “Human Solutions directly addresses family homelessness, unemployment and poverty. We need the help of the community — your help — so we can assist as many families as possible. There is so much that needs to be done. We hope that people will support our work by having a great time on May 16.”

Human Solutions, based out of their offices in east and mid-Multnomah County, touches the lives of more than 100,000 people in need each year by operating shelters for the homeless, providing support for victims of domestic abuse, preventing evictions and utility shut-offs, providing employment training and building affordable housing.

The fun begins at 6 p.m. The hotel is located at 8439 N.E. Columbia Boulevard.

Open houses for bicycle and streetcar plans
Imagine getting around Portland 20 years from now, with streetcars serving neighborhood business districts and an extensive network of bikeways so safe, comfortable and attractive that more than a quarter of all trips are made by bicycle.

That’s a future that could come true if the city adopts a new Streetcar System Plan and a 2009 update to the 1996 Bicycle Master Plan.

You are invited to help shape this transportation transformation at an open house on Wednesday, May 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at David Douglas High North Cafeteria, 1500 S.E. 130th Ave., designed to showcase the two long-range plans.

There will be brief remarks by a member of Mayor Adams’s staff at 6 p.m. There will be bicycle parking, light refreshments and certified child care in English and Spanish.

The 1996 Bicycle Master Plan made Portland the top bicycling city in the nation and became recognized as a national model. Over the past dozen years, the city has successfully implemented many elements of the plan and created robust programs to encourage bicycling. The results: Each year more people are choosing to bicycle. The Bicycle Master Plan 2009 update project is taking a fresh look at the next steps to make Portland a world-class bicycling city. The bicycle plan is expected to go to City Council in October 2009.

The Streetcar System Plan looks at extending development-oriented transit throughout the city. Far outstripping the original ridership projections, the downtown streetcar now carries over 11,000 passengers per day, and ridership growth averages 15 percent per year. Construction of the Eastside Streetcar Loop will start this summer, with service beginning in 2011. Where else should streetcar service be located? The Streetcar System Plan is a big picture look at the city of Portland’s transportation network and how streetcars might fit into this network in the future. The plan identifies a citywide network of potential streetcar corridors integrated with TriMet’s existing and planned transit system. The streetcar plan is expected to go to council in August 2009.

For more information on the Bicycle Master Plan, visit www.portlandonline.com/transportation/bicyclemasterplan, e-mail bicyclemasterplan@pdxtrans.org or call 503-823-4638.
