Environmental mysteries revealed The Parkrose-Gateway area of Northeast Portland has a new environmental laboratory. Pyxis Laboratories, LLC, is located at 12423 N.E. Whitaker Way near Airport Way. Pyxis replaces the former Coffey Laboratories that operated at this site since 1984. The new owner, Willis Gill, purchased Coffey Labs in July 2008. Since then the lab has undergone a major reorganization, cleanup and renovation, and new diagnostic equipment has been purchased. Many of the experienced chemists from Coffey Labs have remained with Pyxis, and new employees have been hired. Preexisting accreditation problems have been successfully addressed Pyxis has fulfilled requirements of the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference, is Washington and Oregon state certified for full-service environmental testing and is in compliance with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality regulations. What is the importance of environmental testing? Protection of air, water and soil is closely linked to individual and community health. Agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Environmental Quality, and the Oregon Department of Human Services oversee numerous regulations to prevent pollution and ensure a safe environment in the home, community and workplace. For example, if asbestos is present in a residence, the owner is required by law to report it at the time of sale. When buying a house, you should know if asbestos is present because removal is expensive. Or suppose you are renovating an old house. How do you know if the paint or water pipes contain lead, or if building materials are insulated with asbestos? Is mold growth in moist areas hazardous to health, and is the water safe to drink? These and many similar questions can be answered by chemical or microscopic analysis at Pyxis. Identifying chemical hazards is cost effective because steps can then be taken to protect residents and workers before exposure occurs. Pyxis routinely tests for pathogenic bacteria such as coliform bacteria, salmonella, shigella, pseudomonas and listeria in water and food. Microscopic analysis is often the most rapid and cost-effective way to solve environmental mysteries, homes and businesses such as cloudy water, color changes in water, fiber identity, clogged filters, insect and worm identification and strange odors. The microscope department at Pyxis includes stereoscopic, polarizing light, dark field and phase contrast microscopes. The director of the department, Fred Colley, has over 40 years of experience in microscopy and microbiology and is certified in asbestos and small particle identification. Colley also has expertise in mold and invertebrate identification. If you suspect lead in household items such as paint, old plumbing or glazed dishes, Pyxis labs can identify a variety of inorganic chemicals and metals including lead, copper and zinc. The lab uses testing methods that are extremely accurate and can detect even trace amounts of chemicals. Other tests include analysis of oil, dioxin, naphthalene, ethylbenzene, radiation and animal feed. If youre having problems in the garden, they do garden and lawn soil analysis as well. Pyxis Laboratories offers prompt service, rapid turnaround and accurate results. All analyses are followed by a written report in approved local, state, federal or custom formats. They can do on-site sampling or sample pickup, either scheduled or as necessary. To speak to a customer representative, please call 503-254-1794. For more information, visit www.pyxislab.com. |
