SCHOOL CORNER
PACE students set record straight
When Parkrose High School Community Connections Program Developer Brendan Gill introduced the International Documentary Challenge to a handful of young Parkrose filmmakers, he didn’t expect the students to take it as seriously as they did.

Director Dakota Wright, a freshman cinematographer, and junior Ayric Thomas, both members of the Parkrose Alternative Center of Education, quickly seized the opportunity to make a film that combats the uninformed, negative opinions a good portion of PHS has toward PACE.

As if that weren’t enough of a challenge, this film was made as part of an international timed documentary filmmaking competition, requiring that they make the film within a five-day span — March 6 to 10. It wasn’t easy, but they finished a film that successfully portrays PACE in a positive, constructive light.

“At Their Own PACE” will be screened at the Hollywood Theater, 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. as part of a series showcasing all of the Portland entries in the International Documentary Challenge.

Mental health program accepting applications
The demand for qualified, well-trained allied health professionals continues to grow, and opportunities in the mental health and human service area are no exception. If a satisfying and rewarding career helping others is your dream, then Mt. Hood Community College can help you achieve it.

The mental health and human service program is now accepting applications for fall term 2008. Those wishing to be considered for acceptance and notified of acceptance status prior to summer quarter 2008 should apply by the priority application deadline of Friday, May 9. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 14. The program is limited to 40 students.

The MHCC Mental Health/Human Service program is well known in the field for its excellence. Graduates report that their education prepares them to step into well-paying positions in all areas of the profession. Opportunities are available in community corrections and in working with the elderly, disabled and troubled youth, and children or persons with mental illness. The two-year degree program is also a great starting point for a four-year bachelor’s degree, as credits easily transfer to several universities.

For more information about the program and how to apply, visit www.mhcc.edu/pages/1228.asp, contact Leslie Allen at allenl@mhcc.edu or call 503-491-7178. For information about other allied health programs, call 503-491-7113.

Youth water polo team forming

Some swimming experience is recommended, but all ability levels are encouraged to come out.

Practices are Monday through Thursday at the Parkrose High School Community Center pool, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. There is a $35 monthly fee. To learn more, call 503-408-2699.
