Mid-county residents have been waiting to see what was to become of the former Albertson's store on Northeast 122nd Avenue and Halsey Street for a while now. In August, the building was demolished and construction began on a new Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette store.

The new store, with 14,000 square feet of retail space, will open to bargain hunters at 7 a.m. on June 23. This facility will employ 38 people, two thirds of whom have barriers to employment and seven employees with disabilities.

Regular customers of the San Rafael store will be happy to learn that employee Derek Chan will make the move to the new location. Chan has enhanced his job and customer service skills at Goodwill and enjoys the independence employment provides him.

The San Rafael store closed its doors on May 23. Employees of that store have been helping prepare for the opening of the new store or filling in at other Goodwill locations. Donations are being accepted at the new site.

Liquor license renewal-south of Burnside Street
All liquor licenses south of Burnside Street within the Portland city limits, both east and west will expire on July 1, unless renewed by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. As part of the renewal process, the city of Portland makes recommendations to the OLCC on renewal applications using information gathered from neighbors, community organizations and public safety officials. The city of Portland is home to approximately 2,500 liquor license establishments, about half of which are coming up for renewal. Neighbors, neighborhood and business associations and community organizations have a very important role in this process.

The annual renewal is an opportunity for communities to address problems or concerns with licensed establishments in their neighborhoods. Concerned neighbors and community organizations wishing to oppose a license renewal south of Burnside Street should advise the Office of Neighborhood Involvement as soon as possible. Licensed establishments not identified by the city of Portland as problems are processed as though they received a favorable recommendation. Opposition received by individuals and organizations is considered by the city before a recommendation is made to the OLCC. If neighbors have concerns but do not wish to formally oppose the license renewal, this is an excellent opportunity to engage in problem solving to address concerns informally.

Information about liquor establishments with ongoing problems must be received by June 5.

Please contact Theresa Marchetti, city of Portland liquor license specialist, at 503-823-3092 or theresa.marchetti@portlandoregon.gov.

Local credit union branch outgrows current Mall 205 location
The Unitus Community Credit Union Mall 205 branch will move to 1052 S.E. 96th Ave. in July. This new, larger space also offers more parking. For now, the branch on Southeast 105th Avenue and Washington Street is open to serve members.

Unitus Community Credit Union will be relocating its Mall 205 branch to a new, larger location less than a mile away from the current location. The new Unitus Mall 205 branch will be located right next to Target and Tuesday Morning at 1052 S.E. 96th Ave. The entire Unitus Mall 205 staff will be moving to the new location when it opens in late July.
The existing Unitus branch at Mall 205 opened in August 2002. Since that time, this branch has become the busiest - and yet smallest - location for the 74 year old credit union. After carefully monitoring the overwhelming success of this branch location for some time, it was crucial to find the right location to provide continued convenience to Unitus members and provide for future growth. The new location doubles the size of the branch, providing new services and ample parking for credit union members.

Unitus has experienced sustained and steady growth during a challenging economy. Jason Werts, vice president of member services stated, “We are very excited for this change and anticipate that the news will generate excitement among our members.”

Unitus Community Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution serving people who work or live in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Marion, Polk, Yamhill and Clark Counties. Additional information about Unitus is available at unitusccu.com or by phone at 800-452-0900.
