Memo Pad... To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers' lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors. Memo Pad submissions for February issue are due Sunday, Jan. 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672. Campfires for 6th graders The nights at Outdoor School are magical: the glow of the campfire, songs and skits with friends old and new, the quiet walk back to the cabin, wrapped up in an individual goodnight from the student leaders. The cost for a 6th grader to spend the night at Outdoor School is around $60. Donate $60 to provide one night for one student; get friends and family together to sponsor a night for a cabin of kids for $600; $1800 will pay for one night at Outdoor School for one class of 6th graders. The Multnomah Education Service District budget can no longer cover the cost to send area students to Outdoor School. David Douglas, Parkrose and Reynolds school districts are now responsible for raising these funds. Your donation can be directed to a district or applied where it is needed most. Make checks payable to Friends of Outdoor School (specify which district if you like) and mail it to Friends of Outdoor School, 11611 N.E. Ainsworth Circle, Portland, OR 97220. Donations in support of David Douglas students can also be made payable to David Douglas Education Foundation for ODS and mailed to the David Douglas District Office, Attn: DDEF for Outdoor School, 1500 S.E. 130th Ave., Portland, OR 97233-1799. Mail checks payable to Parkrose Friends of Outdoor School to Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St., Portland OR 97220-1498. To help send Reynolds 6th graders to Outdoor School, make checks payable to Reynolds Friends of Outdoor School and mail to Reynolds Middle School, 1200 N.E. 201st Ave., Fairview, OR 97024. Donations can also be made on line at friendsofoutdoorschool.org. All donations are 100 percent tax deductible. Drama, voice and academics lead to recognition by Gateway Elks

Free food for feral and stray cats The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and the Pongo Fund will give caregivers free cat food throughout this month when they bring a feral or stray cat to FCCO to be spayed or neutered. All spay and neuter services are provided at FCCO on a donation-basis. Food will be given while supplies last. A cat can go into heat at five-months old, and can have several litters of kittens each year. FCCO encourages caregivers to get their free-roaming cats spayed and neutered before they go into heat and have kittens in the warmer months. A cat can be safely spayed or neutered as early as two-months old. FCCO loans traps and can help caregivers with large colonies or single cats. If you are feeding feral or stray cats, please call 503-797-2606 or visit feralcats.com. |
