Rain couldn’t dampen spirits at sixth annual Rose Festival Cruise-in

THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

Between rain showers Parkrose resident Mike Knudsen poses with his 1957 Chevrolet. This was just part of the festivities at the sixth annual Rose Festival Cruise-in, produced by the Parkrose Business Association.

The sixth annual Rose Festival Cruise-in was held June 24 at the Parkrose High School Community Center. Dozens of entrants and hundreds of visitors enjoyed food, vendors, entertainment and, of course, classic and custom automobiles. The Cruise-in is an official Portland Rose Festival event

“The rains came, the number of cars and spectators were down, but the spirits were high as the feedback from the participants was glowing,” Marsha Lee, event coordinator from the Parkrose Business Association, told the Memo. Lee added that more than one person said this was “the best car show I have ever been to.”

Proceeds from the event benefit the PBA Scholarships for Parkrose Seniors program, along with enhancement projects for the Parkrose community in general.

Lee said three of the five PBA 2007 scholarship recipients attended and took part in the car trophy awards ceremony. Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams introduced the recipients to the crowd and gave them an opportunity to thank attendees for making their scholarships a reality.

Lee also reported that two “blow-up cars” were on hand to bring excitement, as they do every year. “Blow-up cars” are autos that have the oil drained and are run until the engines seize. PBA board member and past president Wayne Stoll, never short on words, kept the crowd entertained as he tempted spectators to place their dollars on a time the engines would quit. The winner got half the pot, the other half goes to the PBA scholarship..

“Without our event sponsor, Rex Heating and Air Conditioning, and our major sponsor, West Coast Bank,” Lee said, “an event like the Cruise-in would not be possible.” Lee divulged that in addition to “a generous cash donation,” Rex Heating and Air Conditioning donated a state-of-the-art barbecue and sponsored the Butch and the Buicks band for the event’s live entertainment. Lee said that West Coast Bank, along with providing a cash donation, contributed a set of four wheels purchased from Bob Brown Tire Center, which provided a set of four tires.
