Memo Pad...(continued) PBA awards scholarship Among so many outstanding applications for the Parkrose Business Association (PBA) $1000 Scholarship, Parkrose High School (PHS) graduate Nicole Clarke caught the attention of the selection committee as she met each one of the criteria for selection: 1) Academic Achievement; 2) Service to Community; 3) School Involvement; 4) Need for Financial Support. Nicole strives for excellence. As Maria Fuhrmann of the PHS English Dept. puts it, Nicoles tireless commitment to excellence impressed me, from small homework assignments to major essays. She exemplifies what an honors student should be. Not only did Nicole excel in academics graduating with a 3.77 GPA, she also received the Distinguished Scholar title by taking four years of honors classes, along with the most difficult math and science classes, and maintaining all As and Bs. Nicole was also very involved in school and community activities, and volunteer service. A few of those commitments were Dance Team, Honors Program, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, Symphonic Band, Newspaper, Spanish Club and German Club. She volunteered her time at Borders Bookstore and held a part-time job at American International Forest Products. Fuhrmann further states, Nicoles interest in learning, her superior work ethic, and pleasant disposition will enable her to succeed. Nicole will be attending college in the Portland area with plans to stay active and involved in the Parkrose community. The PBA Scholarship Selection Committee is very pleased with their choice for the 2003 Scholarship Award and proud of the accomplishments of Nicole Clarke. Holiday helpers needed to deliver meals to seniors Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals-On-Wheels People, needs extra help to ensure homebound seniors throughout Portland receive meals during the Labor Day weekend. Holiday weekends are especially difficult because many of our regular volunteers go on vacation with their families, said Angel Pilato, volunteer manager. We would greatly appreciate the communitys help in making sure our frail elderly are fed during the holiday. It takes about an hour and a half to deliver the meals, and volunteers can arrange to deliver meals in their neighborhood, Pilato added. For more information about how you can get involved, call Angel Pilato at (503) 988-6239. State champions
At the tournament played in Baker City from July 19 thru July 24, these 13-14 year olds went undefeated besting Crook County by a score of 13-3, Baker City 12-9, Sunset Park 5-4, and Upper Rogue 6-4 in the title game. Manager Tracy Kent reports that this is the first state title for a Parkrose Jr. Girls softball team. By virtue of their victory in Baker City, the team moved on to the Divisional Tournament hosted by Mt. Hood Little League in southeast Portland July 26-28. The division is comprised of teams representing Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. The Parkrose girls lost to eventual champion Washington 4-1 in their first game, went on to defeat Idaho 10-0 and lost to Alaska 1-0 in a game fans called thrilling. Kent, who has been a coach for 14 years, says these girls reached this level of success through their commitment to hard work and focus on fundamental skills. They voluntarily participated in winter workouts for 3 hours every Sunday. Many of the girls have been playing together since age 9 and have set their sights on being competitive in the Mt Hood Conference when they reach high school play. Manager Kent is assisted by Coaches Paul DeKay and June Clanton. He sites the support of the Parkrose Little League as being key to their successes at the District and State tournaments. |
