MEMO Calendar - continued MHCC offers soccer referee training class Become a soccer referee this summer with the help of a non-credit class offered through Mt. Hood Community Colleges Continuing Education program. Soccer Referee Training is an entry-level training course designed to teach the rules of the game as well as the officiating skills necessary to manage and conduct soccer matches. Participants can become registered nationally with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) by completing this course, passing the USSF exam and paying USSF a $25 registration fee. This class is offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12 through Monday, Aug. 26 on MHCCs Gresham campus. Learn more about cosmetic surgery The Cosmetic Surgery Center of Woodland Park Hospital will present a seminar on different types of cosmetic surgery from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Dr. Gregory Roduner will begin with a presentation of body cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He will show before and after slides of breast surgery, including augmentation, reduction, lift, and post-mastectomy reconstruction. He will also explain the difference between tummy tucks, mini-tucks and maxi-tucks. He will show when each is appropriate. Liposuction, used to contour areas that do not respond to dieting and exercise, will also be featured. Dr. Gary Delorit will feature facial cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. His presentation will utilize slides to explain eyelid surgery, eyebrow lifts and when each should be used. Facelifts as well as other adjunctive procedures will also be featured. Monthly Group Meetings Expand your business contacts The Parkrose Business Association (PBA) is a local business association that brings together owners and mangers of the community to improve the neighborhood. The association also informs business owners about many topics of interest, from the need for local bus stations to the state of the economy. There is no general PBA meeting in August, but there will be a board meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 7 a.m. in Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Get involved in your own governing Each month, Maywood Park residents have the uniquely American opportunity to participate in their government. Dont ignore your right to have a say in the laws that govern you. Whether you have an opinion you want heard or you would just like to know what is going on in your neighborhood, a city council meeting is the answer. Maywood Park City Council meetings for August will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and Tuesday, Aug. 20. The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the Maywood Park campus of Mt. Hood Community College, 10100 N.E. Prescott St. Meetings are usually located in room 223. Look for the sign in the front window. Turn down the volume If you are tired of griping about airport noise and having nothing change, the city of Portland is offering you a chance to make a difference. One way to do that is to join the next meeting of the Citizens Noise Advisory Committee (CNAC) on Thursday, Aug. 8 in the Commissions Room of the Port of Portland building downtown at 121 N.W. Everett St. Come to the meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. to educate yourself and express your opinion. The meeting includes time for public comment. Seniors - protect your rights The Elders in Action commission advocates seniors rights and advises government agencies such as the Department of Aging and Disability Services. The commission also works to achieve beneficial legislation for seniors focusing on the areas of transportation for homebound seniors, housing, nutrition and health care. Come participate in a meeting of the commission, which has been a strong voice for seniors for over 30 years. Help keep Americans involved The most important ingredient to a successful democracy is the participation of the people. Its not enough to simply vote every year or two. Help keep your fellow Americans - and yourself - involved in our own governance. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group dedicated to increasing citizen participation in the government. Solve community problems over breakfast Help humanity and enjoy a game of bingo with the Mall 205 Early Risers Kiwanis Club. This lively group spends every Thursday morning discussing ways to be of service to the community, by supporting such organizations as Snow-CAP and the East Portland Community Center. Each weeks meeting also includes a special program with guest speaker. A bingo game with cash prizes is also held each week.
