NPR’s Ketzel Levine to speak at fundraiser
National Public Radio’s, or NPR, gardening expert Ketzel Levine will discuss her recent “big tree” story series at Friends of Trees’ annual Springwood celebration and fundraiser on May 1. The event is from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Red Lion on the Quay on the Columbia River, 100 Columbia St., Vancouver, WA.

Portland General Electric will provide hors d’oeuvres and dessert, and local vineyards are donating Salmon Safe wine. Silent auction items include eco-friendly family outings, dinners and event tickets, artwork by Cracked Pots, and two roundtrip tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies. Raffle tickets are available for $25 each, with the grand prize being two roundtrip tickets on Mexicana Airlines. It isn’t necessary to be present at the event to win the raffle.

One of the successes Friends of Trees will celebrate at Springwood 2004 is the increase in the Portland area’s tree canopy. A recent Portland State University study showed that while most urban areas have lost trees in the past three decades, land covered by trees in Portland has increased from 25.1 to 26.3 percent. The greatest increase in canopy has been in neighborhoods where Friends of Trees has planted trees. According to the study’s co-author, Joe Poracsky, “The study would strongly support the idea that Friends of trees is having an impact.”
Each street and yard tree planted in the Northwest today can provide more than $1,000 in benefits over its lifetime by trapping rainwater on its leaves and reducing stormwater management costs, capturing carbon dioxide through respiration and photosynthesis, trapping pollutants on its leaves, and reducing energy use by providing shade in summer and windbreaks in winter.

Springwood 2004 costs $50 per person, by reservation only. Please RSVP by April 12. To register, inquire about sponsor tables, or buy raffle tickets, call 503-282-8846 ext. 16.

Friends of Trees inspires community stewardship of our urban forest by bringing people in the Portland-Vancouver area together to plant, care for, and learn about city trees. For more information, call 503-284-TREE (8733) or visit Friends of Trees’ web site at www.friendsoftrees.org

Springwood sponsors are Portland General Electric, Backyard Bird Shop, The Joinery, Pacific Power, Portland Nursery, and Tilbury, Ferguson & Neuburg Investment Real Estate, Inc.
