A dream come true
There is a unique shop in Menlo Park Plaza that area residents are sure to enjoy. Known as Dixie’s Golden Girl’s Gifts at 12427 N.E. Glisan St., the shop also houses HairStyles by Dixie.

Dixie Ann Winter is the creative spirit and entrepreneur behind this venture. Upon her arrival in Portland some 35 years ago, Winter began a career styling hair at a shop called Roman Holiday. By 1978, she opened her own salon. Because she collects angels, a friend suggested she name her new business Hair Heaven. A victim of light rail construction in Rockwood, that shop was forced to close, but the indomitable Winter forged ahead. By May of 1985 she had opened Top Hat for Gents and Gals in buildings she purchased and remodeled at Southeast 215th Ave and Stark Street in Gresham.

Fast forward to 1998, Winter is working at Save More Beauty in Menlo Park Plaza when she has a dream about opening a gift shop. At that time a nearby business, Menlo Park Pharmacy, was offering unique gift items. Changes brought about by new ownership of the shopping center resulted in the pharmacy’s demise. Seizing the opportunity, Winter contacted the pharmacy gift buyer, Karen Bellcoff. The combined expertise of these two women resulted in the shop that offers hair care for men, women and children and special gifts for all occasions.

Aided by volunteers Sharon Henderson, Val Oaks, Sandy Luhola and Rosemary Setterlund the shop is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. When you visit, friendly ladies dressed in period pinafores will greet you with old-fashioned hospitality.

If you have questions or would like to make a hair appointment, call 503-256-3800. Otherwise, drop by to experience this special place for yourself and see what can happen when you follow your dreams.
