Upcoming workshops
The Community Energy Project is a non-profit organization that provides information, materials, and technical assistance to over 1,500 Portland residents each year. Through these programs, participants are able to improve the safety and livability of their homes, save money on utility bills, and conserve natural resources.

Learn how to take control of your water and sewer bills at a water conservation workshop Tuesday, April 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at David Douglas Community School at Alice Ott Middle School, 12500 S.E. Ramona St. The workshop provides information on how to detect and repair leaks, water conservation ideas in and around your home, plus details on Portland’s incredible water system. Each Portland household receives an instructional workbook and a free kit of materials worth $25. To register, call 503-284-6827.

Lead poisoning can cause permanent brain and organ damage, learning disabilities and other serious heath problems for young children. The most common sources of lead poisoning are found in and around the home. Go to a free workshop to learn how to protect your family from this dangerous toxin.

In April, a workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial SUN Middle School, 17650 S.E. Brooklyn St.

In May, there will be a workshop on Sunday, May 16 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Adventist Medical Center, 10123 S.E. Market St.

Participants living within Portland City limits will receive a free kit of materials to test for lead and prevent exposure. To register, call 503-284-4962.

Provide habitat in your own backyard
Learn to create beautiful landscapes, protect the environment and attract wildlife to your yard. Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a Basic Naturescaping workshop hosted by the Argay Neighborhood Association.

Naturescaping is landscaping with native plants adapted to our climate and using environmentally friendly gardening practices. Native plants are resistant to native pests and diseases, and require less watering and less, if any, chemical application. Naturescaping can also address pollution problems by helping to control erosion, and reduce polluted runoff.

Pre-registration is required. All workshops are free and open to the public. To register, phone 503-797-1842 or email naturescaping@yahoo.com.

Family Swim Center in the future for East Portland Community Center
The 2002 Parks Levy approved by Portland voters provided funds to complete the East Portland Community Center. Those who have been around long enough will remember that the center was designed to include a future pool, but the pool was not included in the original bond measure. Now is time to finish the job

Join the Portland Parks & Recreation staff to learn about what’s possible in the new facility and share your ideas.

Additional community meetings will be held in the summer to solicit input on options and priorities, and in the fall to present the proposed plan. Development of detailed construction drawings, permitting and bidding will follow. Construction will begin in late 2006 and will take a little over a year to complete. The new pool will open in early 2008.

Two meetings are planned for Thursday, May 13. At 10:30 a.m. the needs of seniors will be discussed. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a general community-planning meeting. Both will be at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave.
