Memo Calendar...

The Mid-county Memo is a newspaper dedicated to serving the community. One of the best ways to do this is by informing Memo readers of upcoming events of interest and meetings of groups they might like to join. Help connect our community! If you are part of a group that you enjoy, let your neighbors know about it. Publicize your special event or fundraiser here in the Mid-county Memo Calendar section.

Submissions for each month are due by the 15th of the previous month. Please have Calendar submissions for December in by Friday, Nov. 15. We prefer e-mailed submissions sent to Dawn Widler, Department Editor at editor@midcountymemo.com. You may also mail complete information to 4052 N.E. 22nd Ave., Portland, OR, 97212-1503, phone 503-287-8904 or fax 503-249-7672.

Protect your eyes
November is national diabetes awareness month. Each year, as many as 24,000 Americans with diabetes lose their eyesight from diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes. However, blindness can be prevented through early detection and treatment.

People with diabetes need to have a dilated eye examination at least once a year. This allows the eye care professional to see more of the inside of the eye to check for diabetic retinopathy and other types of diabetic eye disease, such as glaucoma and cataracts.

For individuals without vision insurance, there is a program, VISION USA, which provides free comprehensive eye examinations year-round with a local optometrist to low income, uninsured working people and their families. VISION USA is available to all individuals with or without diabetes. The American Optometric Association sponsors this program. To apply, call VISION USA at 1-800-766-4466.

Elkettes hold annual Bazaar
The Gateway Elkettes are holding an even bigger and better Annual Holiday Bazaar this year. There will be more vendors than ever before. More than 70 tables of handcrafted gifts and holiday decorations are available for your shopping delight. A lunchroom with free coffee will be available.

Vendors include a husband and wife team that makes everything from welcome signs to birdhouses and Christmas decorations in wood. Expect to find lots of variety, including jewelry, decorated shirts and sweatshirts, ceramics, plastic canvas, silk and dried flower arrangements, dish towels, doll clothes, stained glass, knitted toys and sweaters, quilts and more. The proceeds will be donated to their many charities: Elks Children’s Eye Clinic, Meadowood Speech Camp, Snow Cap, Francis Center, Loaves & Fishes, Bradley Angle House, West Women & Children, Raphael House, Green House, CASA, Shepherd’s Door and the Oregon Food Bank.

The Gateway Elkettes are a committee of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Gateway Lodge #2411. This group of ladies works very hard to raise monies for charities throughout the year.

Support charity and mark a few people off your Christmas list on Saturday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. in the Gateway Elks Lodge #2411, 711 NE 100th Ave. For more information, please call Bazaar chair Darlene Heath at 503-408-8144.
