Participants living within Portland City limits will receive a free kit of materials to test for lead and prevent exposure. To register, call 503-284-4962.

Syttende Mai celebration
On May 17, 1814, the Norwegian Constitution was signed, giving Norway independence from its 500 year union with Denmark. This constitution came about when, following the Napoleonic War, a defeated Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden without consent of the Norwegian people. This lead to a group of Norwegian delegates, who met in Eidsvoll, to create a constitution leading to an independent Norway. The delegates elected Prince Kristian Frederik to be King of Norway. As a result of their action, war with Sweden commenced. After six months of hostility, a peace treaty established Norway and Sweden as separate kingdoms under a common monarch, King Charles XIII, who consented to recognize the Constitution of May 17. But the Norwegian people remained unhappy with this arrangement and sought full independence. In 1905 all ties between Norway and Sweden were peacefully dissolved.

In honor of this event, Grieg Lodge #15, Sons of Norway will present a traditional Syttende Mai celebration on Monday, May 17, at the Norse Hall, 111 N.E. 11th Ave.

The Oslo Lounge will open at 4 p.m. where visitors and guest can partake of authentic Norwegian food. A Grand Parade will commence at 6 p.m. Upon return to Norse Hall, there will be a special program featuring Tom Birnie, Professor of Norwegian Language at Portland State University.

A Norske Runddansere Birthday Ball with dancing to Portland’s own Scandinavian band, Hapsala, will follow from 8 to 10 p.m. There will be free hotdogs and soda, along with games and activities for the children.

Everyone is most welcome and encouraged to wear their National Dress.

For more information, contact Marilyn Lewis at 503-236-3401.

Caring, sharing, reaching out
When a crisis occurs in the life of someone we care about, it’s natural to want to reach out. But sometimes we hesitate to visit or call because we are afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing.

The Providence Hospice Community Care Program will present a free seminar entitled “I Don’t Know What to Say: Practical Ideas for Supporting Someone Who is Seriously Ill” on Wednesday, May 19. Woodland Park Baptist Church, 11375 N.E. Halsey St., will host two presentations at 1 and 7 p.m.

This two-hour workshop includes suggestions for what to say or not say, and what to do or not do when caring for a person who is ill or suffering. The presentation emphasizes the importance of listening, the power of presence, and their relationship to the healing process.

Please RSVP to Pastor George Herrick at 503-253-1944

Argay will be cleaning up
The Argay Neighborhood Association, or ANA, is leading the way to keep Argay looking good. They have arranged to have dumpsters at Shaver Elementary School, 3701 N.E. 131st Place on Saturday May 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Argay residents will be able to get rid of yard debris and litter. Student and neighborhood volunteers will be available to assist neighbors who could use some help.

In the true spirit of community involvement, ANA has invited the Parkrose High School Thespians to offer juice and muffins for sale at Shaver Elementary the morning of the cleanup. Additionally, the Parkrose Senior All Night Party committee will be on hand to wash your car for a nominal fee. Spruce up your home and help out with some fundraising all at the same time.

Student and neighborhood volunteers are needed. Call Gloria Ross at 503-252-1570 to lend a hand.

Robin Reed at 503-238-1692 can answer your questions regarding the Shaver Elementary cleanup site.
