Slough 101
The free Slough 101 workshop on Saturday, March 7 from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. explores the unique character, challenges and opportunities of the Columbia Slough and its watershed. Learn about water quality, neighborhood history, vegetation and urban development challenges. Whether you're interested in fish, wildlife, communities or businesses, this workshop has something for you. This event will be at the Multnomah County Drainage District office, 1880 N.E. Elrod Dr.

Slough 101 is designed for adults interested in learning more about the Columbia Slough watershed. Refreshments and materials will be provided. Preregistration is required, and space is limited. Enjoy a free massage
You will have a chance to learn alternative options for treating stress and common ailments this month at free seminars being offered by Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, 10541 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive.

Experience therapeutic massage known as shiatsu on Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Sample neck, shoulder and hand massages will be available.

On Saturday, March 21 the discussion will focus on seasonal foods that can be beneficial to your overall health. This seminar is from 10 a.m. to noon as well.

Historic farmhouse opens for tours
Take a step back in time on Saturday, March 21, when the Zimmerman Heritage Farmhouse will be open for guided tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The farmhouse, built in 1874, is located at Northeast 171st Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.

Isobel Zimmerman lived in the house until 1992. She is credited with saving family and community history to be shared with future generations.

Tours are $3 for visitors 12 years and up. Children under 12 pay no admission fee. To learn more, call 503-261-8078.

Free women's financial planning workshop
Are you stressed about your financial situation? You can take control. The Northwest Catholic Counseling Center is offering Women and Money, a workshop designed to help women take charge of debt no matter how much you make, and it's being offered completely free of charge. Become inspired to set personal financial goals, learn how to design a budget you can stick with and develop practical tools to manage your money.

Women and Money will be held Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A complimentary lunch will be provided. You are encouraged to bring your teenaged or adult daughters with you. Simple Healthy Cooking Saves Time and Money: Author Jean Johnson will present no-fuss recipes from her book "Cooking Beyond Measure: How to Eat Well without Formal Recipes." Demonstrations will be simple, no-cook recipes -- like sliced pears dipped in flax meal laced with cardamom, cottage cream and raspberries with homemade whole grain muesli, or roasted garlic on whole grain bread. The program will show how quickly and deliciously food comes together when we forget about measuring -- like our grandmas did and like everyday cooks around the world do.
