Help plan the future
The city of Portland Bureau of Planning is beginning the planning process that will shape the way Portland grows and develops over the next 25 years. Called the Portland Plan, it is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make decisions about issues like housing, transportation, jobs, schools and parks. The city needs your help to make sure the Portland Plan reflects communal values, needs and desires as it prepares for the future.

Get involved. There will be a Portland Plan: Community Summit on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. until noon at Floyd Light Middle School, 10800 S.E. Washington St.

Children are welcome. A child corner will be provided. If you are more comfortable communicating in a language that is not English, please bring a friend or relative who can help you communicate.

In preparation consider doing some background reading. Documents that provide a description of the conditions, trends and issues affecting us all are available online at www.portlandonline.com/portlandplan.

You may send your comments to Christine Appleberry, public involvement coordinator, at 503-823-9907 or christine.appleberry@ci.portland.or.us.

PHS student named finalist in Teen Idol competition
When Portland Parks & Recreation announced its second Portland Teen Idol contest this spring, organizers had no idea more than 300 teens would sign up for auditions. Extra audition dates and venues were added to accommodate the huge interest.

The hopefuls have been whittled down to ten finalists. Among those is 15-year-old Alex Hall of Parkrose High School.

Hall will compete for the coveted title of Portland Teen Idol on Saturday, June 14 at 6 p.m. at Benson High School, 546 N.E. 12th Ave. Parks Commissioner Dan Saltzman, singer Storm Large and songwriter and pianist Michael Allen Harrison (a PHS alumnus) are among the special guest judges for this popular teen singing competition.

Tickets are on sale online at www.ticketswest.com and at Tickets West outlets, including at all Portland area Safeway stores. Tickets will also be available beginning at 4 p.m. on the night of the show at the box office at Benson High School. General admission ticket prices are $8 for the upper balcony and $12 for the lower orchestra level. A limited number of special VIP tickets, which include preferred seating, are available for $20.

Saltzman is delighted at the turnout by teens for this year’s program. “I’m hearing the youth are taking this opportunity very seriously and are working hard at preparing for the final competition,” he said. “Over the past four years, Portland Parks has developed new programs that engage teens in activities that not only build their skills and talents, but also help to promote their self-esteem. Portland Teen Idol has proven to be a very successful example of that effort.”

Portland Teen Idol is part of PP&R’s program aimed at providing expanded recreational activities tailored specifically to the interests of teens. These new opportunities originate from the Children’s Bill of Rights, created by hundreds of youth from Portland and Multnomah County, which clearly showed that the community’s youth believe recreational opportunities are an important right for citizens of all ages.

“We’re confident that, with the council’s continued support of Portland Parks’ teen programming, we can expand our outreach to the youth in our community and know programs like Portland Teen Idol won’t lose any of the momentum they have developed,” Saltzman said.

For more information on Portland Teen Idol, please visit www.portlandparks.org and search the Teen Scene under the Activities tab.
