Volunteers needed at childcare center
The in-school childcare program at Parkrose High School is a project supported by the International Fellowship Family Church. This fall, the program will move to a new location and is seeking volunteers to help with this transition and to serve directly in the infant/toddler classroom. If you can help, contact Program Director Tracie Brothers-Norris or Joanne Oleksiak of Community Connections at 503-408-2645 for details.

OASIS honors David Douglas tutors
The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program honored two volunteer tutors, Patty Brost and Edith Summerfield, who have mentored students one-on-one for an hour each week for five years.

Brost has tutored students at Gilbert Park Elementary, and Summerfield has worked with children at Ventura Park Elementary. Each received gold starfish pins, symbolic of the story of a boy saving starfish one at a time.

The OASIS Program seeks additional volunteer tutors, age 50 and over, for the 2007-08 school year. Previous experience is not necessary. Training and materials are provided. OASIS Tutor Program Coordinator Colleen Shannon will be at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 102nd Ave., on Tuesday, July 10 at 1 p.m. to talk to anyone interested in learning more about becoming a tutor. For more information please call Shannon at 503-833-3636 or e-mail her at cshannon@lhs.org.

Work continues on light rail project
Construction on the 6.5-mile I-205 Light Rail Project is under way. Much of the work is taking place within the existing transitway adjacent to I-205. Work includes the construction of seven bridges and one underpass to allow trains to run in a separate right-of-way. Most work will take place on weekdays with occasional night and weekend work.

Two lanes are closed on Southeast Stark Street between 94th and 102nd avenues through July 20. Two lanes are closed on Southeast Washington Street between 94th and 102nd avenues through Aug. 15. One northbound lane will be closed intermittently at the I-205 on-ramp at Stark Street through winter 2008.

TriMet’s fifth MAX line will add a light rail between Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center and to Southwest 5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland between Union Station and Portland State University. It is the first light rail extension into Clackamas County, and it will serve the heart of downtown Portland and the busiest transit destination in the TriMet system — PSU. When it opens in September 2009, it will help revitalize the downtown mall and poise the region for future rail extensions, such as to Milwaukie and to Vancouver, Wash.

For more detailed information on the I-205/Portland Mall MAX Light Rail Project or to receive updates by e-mail, go to www.trimet.org/i205 online.

Motorcycle Advisory committee members sought
The city of Portland’s recently formed Motorcycle and Scooter Citizen Advisory Committee is seeking charter members to represent Portland’s growing motorcycle and scooter community. The MSCAC joins the Office of Transportation’s existing citizen advisory committees for bicycles, pedestrians, and freight and will advise city staff on policies and procedures unique to motorcycle and scooter users.

Five members of the motorcycle and scooter community will be chosen from a pool of applicants and appointed by City Commissioner Sam Adams. The MSCAC will meet quarterly to discuss a variety of issues ranging from safety and parking to policy and promotion. All meetings will be open to the general public; however, the five appointed members of the committee will work closely with city staff to establish agendas and will have voting rights consistent with other citizen advisory committees.

Committee members must live or own a business in Portland and commit to quarterly meetings for a two-year term. The application, job description and committee by-laws can be found at www.gettingaroundportland.org in the Transportation Options link.

Applications for the MSCAC will be accepted until 4 p.m. on July 16.

Applications can be mailed to Donovan Grabowski/MSCAC, Portland Office of Transportation, 1120 S.W. 5th Ave., Room 800, Portland, OR 97204 or submitted via e-mail at donovan.grabowski@pdxtrans.org.
