Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

Memo Pad submissions for the August issue are due by Friday, July 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

Band makes trip to nation’s capital
For much of the last year, Parkrose High School band director Michael Tolon and his students worked to raise money for a trip to Washington, D.C. The band was invited to be part of a celebration commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Thirty-two students made the trip. Tolon and parent chaperones say band members exhibited exemplary behavior that was noted by flight attendants and hotel and restaurant staff throughout their stay.

Alia Appollo, sophomore flutist, remembers being moved by the vast number of crosses left at the World War II memorial. She is also proud of the plaque emblazoned with an eagle that the band was awarded for their participation.

Freshman trumpet player, Justin Garvin was most impressed by the reflecting pool between the Lincoln and Washington monuments. Both were touched by the sacrifice represented at Arlington National Cemetery.

Because the band fell short of the funds need to make the trip, Tolon, Appollo and Garvin were found washing cars at the middle school on a recent Saturday. They will repay an $1100 loan from the principal’s fund with this and other fundraisers.

A band camp will be offered in early August. Contact Tolon at mike_tolon@parkrose.k12.or.us to learn more.

Charitable organization needs your energy
Summer vacation has just begun, but SnowCap is already hard at work preparing for the next school year. It is collecting school clothes, backpacks, school supplies for the 500 children they expect to see in the fall. If your work place would like a barrel to collect school supplies, please call 503-674-8785 ext. 19. As school budgets get tighter more costs are passed on to parents. While this may be reasonable for many families, it is a serious hardship for low-wage workers with school-age children.

SnowCap has also begun its search for the auction items for its annual winter event. If you have ideas or time to help, please call Judy Alley at 503-674-8785 ext. 17.

A special request is being issued for volunteers who can pickup small food donations from local restaurants, cafeterias, and produce stands. These are small amounts that don’t justify sending a big truck. Sometimes it is five loaves of bread, six quarts of soup, or maybe a dozen zucchini. Please don’t let this food go to waste. If you can help SnowCap “rescue” this food, call the number listed above.

Last month Snow-Cap assisted 1,899 local families in need. This can only be done with the outstanding generosity of Mid-County neighbors.

They began by playing baseball in Parkrose, and more recently they helped the OSU Beavers earn a trip to the College World Series. Pair of pitchers represents Parkrose at College World Series
By now most of you are likely aware that the Oregon State University baseball team won the Pacific-10 Conference title and earned a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. You may also have heard that of the 39-player roster, 23 played their high school ball in Oregon. What you might not know is that a pair of kids raised in Parkrose were instrumental in the Beavers’ record setting season.

Sophomore Kevin Gunderson is a co-captain of the team and the closer in the Beaver bullpen. Parkrose Little Leaguer and Central Catholic High School graduate, Kevin is the son of Brent and Phoebe Gunderson of Parkrose.

Former Bronco standout, Eddie Kunz is a hard throwing reliever who, as a freshman, also made the Beaver traveling squad. Kunz also began his baseball career in Parkrose Little League. A year ago, he led the Parkrose High School team to the Mt. Hood Conference championship. He is the son of Ray and Sue Kunz, who live in the Parkrose Heights neighborhood.

David Douglas middle schools add sixth grade class
Things are changing at the two middle schools in the David Douglas School District next year, Alice Ott Middle School, 12500 S.E. Ramona Street, and Floyd Light Middle School at 10800 S.E. Washington Street 503-256-6511 will add a sixth grade to their current seventh and eight grade format.

As a result of increased enrollment over the last 11 years, the district’s elementary schools are exceeding their capacity. To alleviate the overcrowding, the two middle schools will add a sixth grade class beginning the 2005-06 school year.

First year principal of Floyd Light Mark Gaulke said, “It was a great first year. I’ve loved every minute of it.” Floyd Light Middle School had 400 students in its seventh and 370 in its eighth grade classes in the 2004-05 school year. Gaulke estimates they’ll add approximately 250 to 280 students. About next year Gaulke said, “It’ll be a challenge, but we’re up to it.”
