A look back at what was happening in July 1988
In July 1988 we reported on summer concerts at Joseph Wood Hill Park on top of Rocky Butte presented by the Rocky Butte Preservation Society.
We also reported on The Grottos newest resident, Father Lawrence Martin Jenco, O.S.M., who had been a hostage in Lebanon, held in captivity with Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson. Jenco was released after 19 months in captivity. After leaving The Grotto, Jenco resumed his ministry serving as chaplain at the University of Southern California. He often spoke of his experiences as a hostage and emphasized the need to forgive. He and Anderson remained friends until Jencos death from cancer in 1996.
Also in July 1988 we reported on Mid-county citizen activist Jane Baker winning a Spirit of Portland Award. Recognizing the importance of citizen involvement in shaping the livability of Portland, The Spirit of Portland Awards are annually given by the city to individuals, neighborhoods, businesses, and volunteers. By July 1988 Baker had been involved in Mid-county issues for over 10 years. Longtime chair of the Hazelwood Community Group, now the Hazelwood Neighborhood Association, Baker was well known for her comprehensive grasp of issues involved in the annexation of portions of Mid-county into the city that was taking place in the mid-eighties.
