SENIOR RESOURCES
Presentations discuss inner beauty, defensive driving and oral health as we age
A series of seminars directed at seniors is being offered at CherryWood Village, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., during the month of February.

“The Beautiful You Inside and Out,” a free presentation on how growing older for women means the best is yet to be, with special guest Lee Paton is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2. All women in the community are invited to this inspiring lecture designed to encourage women to find their own inner beauty and to share it with others. The CherryWood Red Hat Society will co-host this informative and entertaining morning. Light refreshments will be served. The lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. To learn more, call 503-408-0404.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, “Coaching the Mature Driver,” an educational one-day seminar with topics regarding defensive driving, physical effects of aging and much more for aging drivers wanting to maximize their driving ability will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oregon Education Center and Generations Therapy Clinic are the sponsors. A light lunch will be provided, and there is a $25 fee. Call Michael Anderson at 503-297-4813 to register.

And on Monday, Feb. 13, CherryWood will host an “Oral Health Fair,” consisting of oral health presentations, informational booths and private consultations. Join an enthusiastic group of dental professionals dedicated to preserving oral health in seniors. Healthy refreshments will be served. Get help with new Medicare program
A talk on the new prescription drug program, “Medicare D,” will be held on Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St. The speaker will be Jane Henry. For more information call the church office at 503-253-7567.

Refreshments, tours featured at open house
You are invited to join the folks at Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes, 1825 N.E. 108th Ave., for a Valentine Open House on Friday, Feb. 10. This is your opportunity to see one of Portland’s premier not-for-profit retirement communities. You will learn about independent and assisted-living options and celebrate Valentine’s Day with free refreshments, entertainment, gifts and prize drawings.

MEETINGS
Neighborhood associations provide direct link to city government
Working at the grass roots level to maintain neighborhoods, the officers and members of our neighborhood associations have direct access to city commissioners, staff and bureaus. By getting involved, you will have a voice in changes in your neighborhood. If you do not know which neighborhood association serves you, contact the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave., at 503-823-4550 or epno@epno.org.

On Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m., City Commissioner Randy Leonard is inviting Hazelwood neighbors immediately surrounding the Water Bureau property at 1017 N.E. 117th Ave. to an open house to discuss with them the Water Bureau’s interest in developing that property as a neighborhood park site and to hear neighbors’ ideas and any concerns they might have. Neighbors will also be asked about the prospect of EPNO moving its office into that building.

Hazelwood Neighborhood Association will hold a board workshop this month rather than a regular board meeting. For more information, contact Arlene Kimura at 503-252-9429 or arlene.kimura@kraft.com.

The Mill Park Neighborhood Association will hold a general membership meeting on Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave. (Please note this date is a departure from the regular schedule.)

Commissioner Randy Leonard will also appear at a joint meeting of the Centennial Community Association and the Powellhurst/Gilbert Neighborhood Association on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at Parklane Church, 16001 S.E. Main St.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the general membership of the Wilkes Community Group will meet in the Teamsters Complex, Joe Edgar Hall, 1850 N.E. 162nd Ave. at 7 p.m.

The Parkrose Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St.

The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors board will meet at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St. on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.

Board members of the Argay Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, Feb.21 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 2, 4800 N.E. 122nd Ave.

The Glenfair Elementary School faculty lounge, 15300 N.E. Glisan St. will be the site of the Glenfair Neighborhood Association general membership meeting on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

Get involved with the East Parks Coalition when it meets on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave.

The Woodland Park Neighborhood Association and Russell Neighborhood Association have no February meeting scheduled.

Merger to result in stronger club
The Gateway Kiwanis Club and the Columbia View Kiwanis Club plan to merge, combine talent and provide even stronger community support.

This new group will meet on Wednesdays at Russelville Park at Southeast 103rd Avenue and Burnside Street from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meetings consist of lunch, club business and a guest speaker. Speakers for this month include Tim Meyers, Retired Navy Air Force who will discuss the USS Ranger Aircraft Carrier Portland Museum on Feb. 1.

On the 8th, meet a representative from Operation Nightwatch, an ecumenical street ministry that works with people living in the downtown Portland neighborhood.

Teresa Carr of the Port of Portland will be the guest on Feb. 15.

The expanded reach of this new club creates the opportunity for men and women in the community to get involved. Drop by one of the meetings. You may want to become part of the effort.

Soil and water board to meet
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its monthly board meeting on Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room 443 of Montgomery Park, 2701 N.W. Vaughn St. The agenda for the meeting has not yet been determined. For information, call District Manager Jean Fike at 503-222-7645, ext. 114.
