Gateway salon sporting new ‘do’
Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists at 11424 N.E. Halsey St. recently received a radical interior remodeling. It’s a new styling and color salon inside.

The Memo spoke with Warren Bauer, who owns the shop, along with wife Marie Bauer.

Oscar and June Bauer, Warren Bauer’s parents, started Mr. Oscar Hair Stylists in 1957 in the Gateway Shopping Center. The Bauers would operate three successively larger salons in the shopping center through 1976, when the shopping center was demolished. The Bauers purchased the current location and reopened in 1977.

Warren and Marie Bauer bought the salon 12 years ago. June Bauer still works at the salon; Oscar Bauer passed away in 1983.

Along with Warren and Marie Bauer, two other Bauer offspring work at the salon, Greg Bauer and Renee Bauer Lippelgoos. Other staff members include Tiffany Hassebroek, Rachelle Houghton, Brenda Baxter, Sherri Dean, Sara Bernert and Damani Portin.

Warren Bauer explained that “we were going to just paint the salon and do minor upgrades,” he said, “but we were in here looking at it and decided to make a major change in the salon.”

Warren Bauer came up with a new layout for the salon. Then he and his crew came in with crowbars and sledgehammers and in one day “we gutted the whole salon,” he said. Out went the old stations and chairs.

A professional paint color consultant was hired to develop a new color scheme.

“We’ve changed the color scheme of the countertops,” Bauer said. “Everything is consistent from front to back.”

The old floor covering was torn out, with new tile floors and tile back splashes put in.

Remodeling allowed the comfortable addition of three new stations; in all there are now 13 stations in the salon.

All new furniture was added to the reception area. A Paul Mitchell color bar was added in the front of the salon. Placing the color bar in the front of the salon was purposeful.

“It creates interest,” Bauer said. “It shows customers that we just don’t pour color out of a bottle. We do a lot of custom formulations.”

In addition, TV monitors were added, which play Paul Mitchell educational DVDs. Bauer said the educational videos create interest with the customers and educate the staff while they are working.

Bauer is proud to be connected with the Paul Mitchell line of hair care products and education.

He was a national Paul Mitchell haircut trainer for 10 years, and his sister Renee was a Paul Mitchell national educator.

“We used to be a Paul Mitchell Signature salon,” Bauer said, “then we stepped up to the highest level, which is a Paul Mitchell Focus salon.” Bauer explained that in a Paul Mitchell Focus salon, “everybody in the salon uses Paul Mitchell products and color, and we follow its education program.”

That “focus” gives purpose to Bauer’s hair care philosophy.

“We do one thing,” he stated, “and we do one thing right.”

Bauer said services offered at the salon include what he called “progressive and innovative” hair cutting, along with hair coloring and highlighting, which can include what is known in the industry as block coloring. In addition, permanent waving and formal long hair design are also offered.
