A number of Mid-county sports teams rewarded their fans with record breaking seasons. Here is a synopsis.

It took 24 years, but on Saturday, Nov. 13, one of the two 5th/6th grade Parkrose Colts football teams entered in the twelve team Portland Police Athletic League - successor to Portland's Pop Warner football league - won a championship, beating Reynolds 12-6 in triple overtime at Roosevelt High School.

Unlike the triumphant end to their season, the beginning was rocky. Losing to Alberta Park 19-14, and to Reynolds 16-14, the Colts Black team had a 2-2 record with three games remaining in the seven game season. Winning the final three games earned them the number four playoff seed. Facing 2009 City champion Grant in the first round, who they beat in a defensive battle during the regular season 6-0, they came away with an 8-0 win in another hard fought struggle.

In the semi-finals, the Colts Black team faced the same Alberta Park squad that beat them in the season opener 19-14. This time, when it really counted, the Colts bested them in the re-match 24-14, setting up the finals against the only other team to beat the Colts, the fifth and sixth graders of the Reynolds Raiders.
It was the Parkrose Colts Black Team vs. the Reynolds Raiders, also dressed in black, for all the marbles. In the first quarter, the Colts scored first, but missed the extra point. After that, both teams went up and down the rain soaked field without scoring until, with two minutes left in the game, the Raiders finally reached the end zone, but missed the extra point and the game ended in a tie, 6-6 at the end of regulation.
The first overtime ended without a winner. In the second, the Raiders missed a field goal try. In the third OT, when it looked like no one would ever win on that dark, dank and dismal November day, the Colts were finally able to punch the ball over the goal line, winning 12-6 and securing the first City Championship ever for the little men of the Parkrose Colts 5th/6th Grade team.

Head Coach Mykol Burton, also the freshman coach at Parkrose High School said, “The kids fought long and hard to win this. They deserve it. They're a great bunch of dedicated young men, and I look forward to coaching them again at the high school level in a few years. We're building a strong program (at Parkrose) from the third and fourth grade all the way up to the high school kids.”

The 2010 Colts finished the season with an 8-2 record. Averaging 21 points per game; allowing only an average of 5.5 points per game.

In 2008, the 3rd/4th grade Colts won their first championship for the program with 13 of the same players and most of the same coaches winning this year's 5th/6th grade championship.

Daniel Pavlenko, named Northwest Oregon Conference defensive co-player of the year, had to sit down after an injury in the playoff game against Marist.

At the high school level, David Douglas once again qualified for the state tournament. The Scots were defeated in first round play by Canby, 35-20.

Broncos make playoffs, first time since '82
The Parkrose Bronco football team continued its magical season by winning a tournament play-in game against Hood River Valley 28-27 on Friday, Nov. 5 in Hood River. The following week they traveled to Eugene where they were defeated by Marist 49-7 in first round action. The trip represented the Broncos first appearance in a state football tournament since 1982.

Along with their success at state, a number of Parkrose players earned individual conference honors. Daniel Pavlenko was named Northwest Oregon Conference defensive co-player of the year. Zach Abney was named first team, offense; Tylor King, first team defense. Hung Vy earned second team defensive honors and Marquis Hammick, Armondo Flintroy, Jerry Hunter and Henry Vy earned honorable mention.

As reported last month, the CYO Region 9 Disciples 5th and 6th grade team and the 7th and 8th grade team made the playoffs (See “CYO Region 9 Disciples lead the way,” Mid-County Memo, Nov. 2010). A majority of the kids on these teams go to St. Therese School or Portland Christian. Both teams advanced to Grid Iron Championship round; the Region 3 Kings from Sellwood defeated each.

The Bronco girls were represented on all-conference teams as well. Named to the second team were Courtney Garcia and Brianna Newman. Gabby Wolpert, Lucenia Eufragio, Erica Evans and Dominique Garrison earned honorable mention.

The Reynolds High boys cross country team earned a 4th place finish at the state meet behind the talents of Bekama Jaldi, Mubark Mebrat, Jake Taylor, Tino Melton-Holdman, Brandon Raleigh, Keenan Follet, Birukidin Jaldi. Bekama Jaldi finished 5th overall with a time of 15.55.
