Cherry Blossom says hello to Dozono

TIM CURRAN
THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

Last month at the Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes Center, Portland mayoral candidate Sho Dozono, left, speaks to recent immigrant Long Fu Han, center, and new citizen (January) 2008 Yuangeng He, right. Mr. He, a retired chef, for the last two years has prepared and cooked the weekly offering of ethnic Asian cuisine to patrons. Dozono and his wife, Loen, visited the Cherry Blossom Center to learn about how they can help and support the good work Loaves & Fishes is doing in Mid-county.
Loen Dozono, left, visits with Cornelia Welch Richardson, a regular at the Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes Center in the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. In the background mayoral candidate Sho Dozono listens to concerns of another Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes client. Visit www.loavesandfishesonline.org or call 503-256-2381 to be part of the L&F team, helping them reach their daily goal: “No senior will go hungry or experience social isolation.”

Last month, after deciding to continue his campaign to become Portland’s next mayor, Sho Dozono and his wife, Loen, went on a tour of the Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes Center. They met with staff, volunteers and clients to talk about Loaves & Fishes and why Dozono is running to be Portland’s next mayor.

Citing the need for city hall to work better for all citizens, Dozono said, “I believe Portland’s next mayor has the responsibility to lead our city in meeting the challenge of building a better community.”

Dozono went on, “It’s sad to see that vital and important neighborhood gathering places like this one — so important to the long-term health of our city, daily supported by dozens of volunteers, funded by private donations and government revenues — are forced to compete with politicians’ pet projects to maintain current funding levels. Community centers like these should receive funding priority.”

The Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes Center, located in the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., serves hot, nutritious lunches to anyone over 60, weekdays at noon. Regardless of income, seniors are invited to dine, paying what they can, as meals are provided on a donation basis. The Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes Center, one of 37 in the metro area, also offers fitness, art and computer classes, field trips and a variety of senior services.

Homebound seniors can call 503-256-2381 to arrange a Meals-on-Wheels delivery. Approximately 650 meals per week are served in this dining hall, and volunteer drivers deliver 1,250 weekly Meals-on-Wheels. Needing 25 volunteers a day, contact Cherry Blossom Site Manager Bennett Bailey at 503-256-2381 or bbailey@lfcpdx.org. if you can help. They’re always needing drivers, hosts, food preparers, cooks and clean up help.
