Free health classes and support groups
Adventist Health is offering several free health education classes to the public. All listed classes are free, and will be held at the Adventist Health Center, 10123 S.E. Market St. For more information, or to sign up for a class, please call 503-256-4000.

• Smoke-Free Support Group: Rid your life of a smelly, unhealthy habit with the Smoke-Free Support Group. There is no pre-registration necessary to join the group, which meets from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays in Conference Room #3.

• First Choice 65: This workshop will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Education Center A. The workshop educates attendees about First Choice 65, a health plan designed to work as a supplement to Medicare.

• Secure Horizons: This workshop will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from10 to 11:30 a.m. in Education Center B. The workshop educates attendees about the Secure Horizons health plan, Medicare, and how the two work together for maximum coverage.

• Leg Alert: Are you having leg pain? This safe, simple screening using ankle and arm blood pressure will screen for peripheral artery (PAD). This workshop also includes a discussion of PAD and its causes. Pre-registration is required. This workshop will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Conference Room 1 and 2.

• Better Breathers Support Group: This monthly support group for COPD/asthma patients and the family will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Patio Room. This group offers the chance for patients and their families to provide and exchange information in a warm, caring, supportive environment. • The Heart Talk Support Group: This group meets on Monday, Sept. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 432, the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Education Room. This group is led by Sandra Dykes, a registered nurse with extensive experience. The support group not only allows time for group discussions, but also educates members on a wide range of heart-related topics. This group sees everything from CPR lessons to visits from cardio-pulmonary specialists. Sign up today and learn more about your heart. For more information, please call 503-251-6260.

• Cancer Support: This group meets on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Garden Room. This support group provides education, support, and coping skills for those with cancer and their loved ones. For more information, please call 503-251-6192.

Join a growing field
Oregon’s horticulture industry is expanding and Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) is responding by offering a variety of classes in the college’s Horticulture program.

Wholesale sales of ornamental plants in Oregon, including Christmas trees, are amounting to billions of dollars and positions are available in the areas of production, marketing, research, pest management, floriculture, teaching, public gardens and many other related industries.

At MHCC, fall term offerings include: Pacific Northwest Horticulture Industry, Fall Greenhouse and Nursery Practices, Perennial and Native Plants and Horticulture Marketing/Customer Service.

MHCC offers both a one-year certificate and a two-year associate degree in horticulture. There are several specializations for students to choose from, including nursery production, landscape design, landscape management and floriculture.
