MEMO Calendar Items - continued Protect your family Protect your family this month with a free Lead Poisoning Prevention workshop offered by the Community Energy Project. Lead poisoning can cause brain and organ damage, learning disabilities and other serious health problems for young children. The most common sources of lead poisoning are found in and around the home. Come to a workshop and learn about the effects and sources of lead poisoning, how to test for lead and prevention tips. Qualified participants receive a free kit of materials worth $45. Free childcare is provided. A day of remembrance Rev. Bill Gates of the Parkrose United Methodist Church will conduct a service of prayer and hope on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. This service will memorialize the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. All who have been impacted by the attack and subsequent war on terror are invited to this service to pray for peace, for resolution to world and local poverty, and for justice that transcends national, ethnic, and religious boundaries. Hoedown at harvest time The Second Annual Parkrose Harvest Festival is just around the corner. All Parkrose and Maywood Park neighbors are invited on Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Rossi Farms, N.E. 122nd Ave. and Shaver St. This event will include free corn on the cob, hot dogs, pop, potato chips, and more. The festival offers fun and games of all kinds. There will be music and dancing as well as hayrides and lots of other activities for kids and adults. Play golf, win prizes, and support Snow-CAP The Snow-CAP/ St. Aidans Charity Golf Tournament will be held on the Gresham Golf course, 2155 N. E. Division St. in Gresham on Saturday, Sept. 28. Starting time is 10:30 a.m. Entry fee is $65 per person. This event will be a four-person scramble. Act now; attendance is limited to 25 teams. Cash prizes will be awarded for KPs (closest to the pin), long drives, and first, second, and third place. You might also be the lucky winner of a door prize. Door prizes include gift certificates, golf equipment, and other goodies. Hot dogs, chips, and beer will be served on the course. Not only do you have the chance to enjoy a game of golf and win a prize, you will also support a local charity. Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to Snow-CAP Community Charities, an organization that provides food, clothing, and advocacy for the poor. Free workshop for Gateway and Lents businesses On Wednesday, October 16, the Portland Development Commission and the University of Portlands Center for Entrepreneurship will be hosting a special evening for small businesses in the Gateway and Lents neighborhoods. Each business will be matched with an experienced Portland business leader who will work with them in developing a tailored business improvement strategy. In addition, representatives from Cascadia Revolving Loan Fund and the Small Business Development Council will be on hand to explain the special financing and educational services available to small businesses. Church holds community celebration Crossroads Church invites community members to join in their community block party, held on Sunday, Sept 8 from 11 to 3 p.m. Free food, music, and lots of activities will be available. This event will also supply an opportunity to tour the new Senior Center and Food Bank. Avoid the worst road hazard - other drivers The American Association of Retired People regularly offers a 55 Alive defensive driving course. This course helps teach older citizens strategies of safe driving. One feature that makes this class especially valuable to seniors is that some of the strategies that are presented are designed to help overcome the problems that can come with age, such as dimmed vision or slow reflexes. Not only will you avoid costly tickets, fines, and accidents, but the 55 Alive driving course can also help save you money on your car insurance - check with your insurance provider. The class is a refresher course in driving skills and general information, available to anyone aged 55 or over.
