Baby shop waves bye-bye
By Monday, September 30th, after 13 years of operation, A. Jay’s Baby Shoppe in Menlo Park Plaza is closing its doors forever. Owner Melody Staley is calling it quits after 29 years of working at the same location, first for other people and starting in 1989, for herself.

Since building the last addition at Menlo Park Plaza in 1973, there’s been a baby store at this same location. The first store was called Scott’s Baby News, where Staley worked with her mother Wilma Thomas. Segal’s Baby News followed Scott’s, where Melody and Wilma also worked. Segal’s closed in 1989, and A. Jay’s Baby Shoppe opened later the same year, named after a combination of family initials. Melody, together with her mother Wilma and 10-year employee Joyce Thomas, (no relation) ran the store from the beginning and all three will be there at the end.

Dave Staley, Melody’s husband, has been working and “helping out” at A. Jay’s since retiring from Kienow’s Grocery Store in 1998, after 29 years. Kienow’s was the anchor tenant of Menlo Park Plaza before closing in 1999.

“It was a hard decision to close,” says Staley. “They (Plaza owners Pan Pacific Retail Properties) made it easy for us to stay, we decided it was time for us to move on.” Until closing, there’s a big sale and price reduction on all items.

When asked what she and Dave were going to do after closing the store, Staley replied, “I don’t know for sure, maybe I’ll get another job, maybe we’ll work in our garden. What am I saying? We don’t even own a lawn mower!” Joyce Thomas chimes in, “Well Melody, that could be your first purchase after closing.” That moment captured the essence of Melody and Joyce’s personalities, cheerful, humorous and wry.

Accepting the fact of a Menlo Park Plaza without Melody or Dave Staley is sad. The Mid-county business community is the loser here. The Mid-county Memo and we’re certain many others, wish you and Dave all the best in the future. We’ll miss you Melody, bye-bye.
