July 1998 was a hot month - in more ways than one

This being the 20th anniversary year of your Mid-county Memo, we've been looking back at some of our favorite front pages and dramatic images from the Memo.

This month we look back at the July 1998 issue's front page.

On it you'll see two stories.

The first story is on the how Wilkes Park, at Northeast 154th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, got its start. The story detailed the genesis of Wilkes Park and the people responsible for bringing this newest Mid-County Park into existence.

The second story was about the ongoing discord in the Parkrose School District, primarily caused by two school board members. Lawsuits, personnel firings, accusations of fiduciary malfeasance and recall elections were all part of the term of board member Karen Rutledge.

The turmoil lasted for years and at the time made the Parkrose School District a local laughingstock.

With Rutledge's departure from the board in 2001, the school district got back its focus - the students.
