Aphasia care-giver and survivor group forming
Portland State University Speech and Hearing Science Department has formed an aphasia self-help group for adults with aphasia and their family members here in Mid-Multnomah County. Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brain-most commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals. But brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma, from brain tumors or from infections.

The group is for families in the Portland metro area. The focus will be to foster improved communication and participation within the community. Members should be at least 18 years old, able to provide their own transportation and be at least 3 months past the onset of aphasia.

Meetings are held in the Luther Lodge at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave. on alternate Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. There is no cost.

For more information call Lisa Dubitsky, the group facilitator, at 503-245-2410 or via e-mail at lisa_dubitsky@yahoo.com.
