Longtime Gateway barber dies

Keith Alan Bones 1947-2011, 'Bones the Barber.'
Keith Alan Bones, 64, a barber at PJ's II Styling Salon in Gateway for over 37 years, died in his sleep on Oct. 6. He was born in Tillamook on Feb. 21, 1947, the first child of Raymond and Clarice Bones.

He attended Nestucca High School and after graduation, he attended Oregon Institute of Technology for a year.

Bones enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and served on the aircraft carrier Iwo Jima for four years as an electronics technician.

He married Jan Fuehrer in 1968. In seven years of marriage, they had two daughters, Heather and Andrea.

An avid sports fan, Bones played basketball and baseball in high school.

He enjoyed watching pro sports, especially car and boat racing. He was a pit crew member for different local car and boat racing teams.

Bones took part in numerous pool leagues, foosball tourneys and trivia contests held at Mid-county bars and restaurants such as Bradford's, Wooden Chicken Pub and Refectory Restaurant.

Dozens of his customers, friends and relatives remembered him fondly at a crowded celebration of his life held Sat., Oct. 22, in Bradford's Sports Lounge, next door to where he worked for nearly four decades.

Brad Fouts, Bradford's Sports Lounge owner said, “Everybody knew Bones the Barber. He never took a vacation. To help people, he would come in to work on his days off to cut people's hair; Bones was a special guy.”

Barry Adams, one of Bones' boyhood friends wrote in his online Oregonian obituary Guest Book, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of the family for the loss of Keith; I know how solid and likeable a young person he was, so I am certain he lived his life the same way. I have memories of him 'flying' around the basketball court as he once did (particularly hard for grandchildren to imagine) and it brought a smile to my even older face this morning as I remembered back. Better days are ahead.”

In addition to leaving behind dozens of loyal friends, Bones is survived by daughters, Heather Roberts (David), and Andrea Geisbush; eight grandchildren: Ariel, Brianna, Conner, Davianna, Emily, Matthew, Marissa and Nathan; brother Dean (Laurie); sister, Susan Lenzi (Chuck); and sister, Sharon Geisert (Phil).

A graveside service was held Oct. 15 in Hebo, Oregon.

Rememberance in the form of donations to help the family with funeral costs can be made at any Riverview Community Bank branch.
