THE ARTS
Drama
A play within a play, Joan of Lorraine, grapples with the timeless issues of integrity, financial expediency, and compromise. The cast in the play demonstrates just why Joan of Arc, a simple 14-year-old farm girl of the 14th century, became a symbol of noble causes that seem to lose but win in the end. In the process the audience sees remarkable similarities shared by the history of the play and by the play itself. Shannon Richmond portrays Joan of Lorraine.

The cast of the play includes both veterans and newcomers to the stage of Portland Christian High School, 12425 N.E. San Rafael St. Evening performances only, beginning at 7:30 p.m., are slated for November 6, 7, 8, 14, and 15. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in the school office during school hours. Ticket prices are $8 each for general admission; tickets for individuals presenting a student body card and audience members older than 60 will be $5 each. All questions may be directed to Mrs. Highman, the director, at 503-256-3960 extension 260.

Comedy theatre
Parkrose High School’s first theatrical production of the season is Tom Stoppard’s farcical comedy The Real Inspector Hound. Feuding theatre critics Birdboot and Moon are swept (both metaphorically and literally) into the murder mystery they are viewing. The audience watches the critics watch this horrendous spoof on Agatha Christie-esque melodramas centering around a dead body that no one seems to notice, a badly conceived love triangle, a mysterious and gruff missing brother, an unintentionally nosey house maid, and a classic bumbling inspector. “Zanily, crazily fun,” said The New York Times and “Pure hilarity...Some of Stoppard’s best writing,” said The International Herald Tribune. The play opens Thursday, November 13 and runs through Saturday, November 15. All show times are at 8 p.m. in the Parkrose High School Theatre at 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Tickets are available at the door, $7 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens.

Musical theater
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel will be performed in the newly remodeled Horner Performing Arts Center at David Douglas High School Nov.13, 14, and 15 and Nov. 19, 20, and 21. Many critics regard this musical as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s finest artistic achievement. Making his directing debut at the high school will be the new theatre teacher, Jesse Merz. Mr. Merz comes to David Douglas with an extensive career acting Off-Broadway, in regional theatre, and in feature films. He has also directed over 40 productions. Most recently he was the Artistic Director of Longview Stageworks and he also runs a very successful summer theatre camp for students from around the world.

Carousel takes place along a New England seacoast and has many wonderful songs including: “If I Loved You” “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over”, and “When You Walk Through A Storm”.
