Your friendly, neighborhood orthodontist

Orthodontist Dr. Michael Brown, owner of Sunnyside Orthodontics in Gateway, works to give patient Crystal Cunningham an even more beautiful smile.
TIM CURRAN/Mid-county Memo
Dr. Michael A. Brown, DMD PC has been practicing orthodontics for 16 years at Sunnyside Orthodontics Specialists, 10850 N.E. Halsey St., in the Gateway district. He assumed the ownership of the family business when his father, Dr. Laurel Brown retired in 1995. Brown expressed “a great feeling of accomplishment to know we have been a part of this area for so long” when he noted the practice was originally opened in 1962 by his father and Dr. Thurman Hice. He recalls picking up cigarette butts in the parking lot while in high school and assisting his father while in college and dental school.

Brown attributes the longevity of this practice to the long held approach of treating all patients as family. Current patients include children whose parents were served by his father. This generational comfort zone no doubt stems from a staff that has been on board as long as 30 years.
While orthodontia is the oldest specialty in dentistry and has been around for over a century, Brown notes that advances have resulted in smaller braces, more comfortable designs, and reduced discomfort associated with braces and tooth movement.

Dr. Brown grew up in the Glenfair neighborhood near Glendoveer Golf Course and attended Reynolds High School. He and wife Shelly — chief financial officer and accounts payable person for the pracrice — live in Happy Valley and have two kids, 13-year-old Jaeden and 16-year-old Noelle, who also works at the family practice doing general office work.

Brown believes “orthodontic treatment to be an excellent personal investment that can have benefits well beyond just straight teeth. First impressions, personal self-image, economic and social opportunities have all been shown to be influenced by appearance. Facial balance and the smile are key factors in this determination.”

Sunnyside Orthodontics Specialists serves children and adults. In fact, nearly a quarter of patients served are adults.

Call at 503-255-1694 to get your smile on.
