Frank M. Tunno, Gateway area businessman, died Dec. 19 after a long illness. He was 85.

Tunno was the principal owner of Stewart & Tunno Insurance Agency, which he started in the Gateway area in 1957 with his partner, Bill Stewart.

Born in Helper, Utah, on Sept. 7, 1921, Tunno grew up in Portland.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the U.S. Navy during World War II and the National Guard after the war.

In 1941 he married Eleanor Tanzell; she died in March 2006.

Tunno was a past prime minister of the Royal Rosarians. In addition, he was a member of the Lake Oswego Country Club, the Astoria Country Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Elks.

Survivors include two cousins, Angie Prezel and Carol Ann Prezel.

Remembrances should be made to the Salvation Army.

“Frank’s gone,” said Stewart & Tunno Vice President Ron Manza, “but his ethics and high standards will continue in the future as the agency goes on.”

“Frank was a pioneer in the insurance agency business,” Manza continued, “and a pioneer in Gateway, as one of the first businesses that occupied the Gateway Shopping Center.”

Under Tunno’s leadership, Stewart & Tunno grew with the greater Gateway area. The business operated at several locations in Gateway, with the latest being 345 N.E. 102nd Ave.

The insurance agency recently purchased the Gurnsey Insurance Agency, located at East Burnside Street and 102nd Avenue.

Stewart & Tunno, which is ranked by the Portland Business Journal as one of the top 20 insurance agencies in Portland, continues to offer unique services, such as jewelry appraisal clinics held at the firm’s office. The agency also is updating its Web site to allow clients to obtain automobile insurance quotes at their convenience.

The agency represents many insurance carriers in order to meet the needs of clients for both personal and business insurance.
