Memo Calendar (continued) ... Neighborhood activists can learn about land use A workshop for Portland neighborhood and community activists on the ABCs of Land Use will be held on Saturday, March 8. Participants will learn about the City of Portlands planning and land review process so that they may be informed advocates for their communities on future land use issues. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the North Portland Neighborhood Office, located in the historic Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N. Brandon at Schofield Street. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement and North Portland Neighborhood Services. Kathleen Stokes with the Bureau of Development Services and Ellen Ryker with the Bureau of Planning will present information on land use and transportation policies and procedures. The workshop will cover topics including land use reviews, the difference between Type I, Type II and Type III development applications, Land Use Notices, and the responsibilities of a Neighborhood Association land use chair. Participants will take part in a hands-on exercise responding to a Land Use Review process and have a chance to meet fellow neighborhood activists involved with similar issues in their neighborhood. For neighborhood activists to be most effective in dealing with new development and changing land use policies, they need to stay informed and communicate with each other and city land use staff, said Tom Griffin-Valade, Director of North Portland Neighborhood Services.
