Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county MEMO offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors. To ensure publication in the MEMO Pad, please send submissions for each month by the 15th of the previous month. MEMO Pad submissions for the July issue are due by Tuesday, June 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

DeShanté Bolds, Parkrose Junior, displays awarding winning work.
David Douglas students receive awards
The Gateway Area Business Association, or GABA, recently instituted a scholarship program for deserving David Douglas High School seniors.

The GABA scholarship committee, who discovered the students represented all that is good about the community screened applicants. They were so impressed that a special request was made to the GABA Board of Directors to approve scholarships for three runners-up.

Carolyn R. Ham was awarded a $1000 scholarship as the official scholarship winner. Her name will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque for display in the David Douglas High School trophy case.

Rachel Huber, Sherry L. Nelson and Chelsea Spaniol were each awarded $250.

Parkrose students earn best in show
The annual Mt. Hood Regional High School Art Exhibit featuring visual artwork from area high schools took place recently. The community college’s Visual Arts Center Gallery displayed the work and college faculty selected students for several Best In Show categories. An untitled painting by Parkrose student DeShanté Bolds was honored for best two-dimensional work by a junior.

“DeShanté is quiet, focused and serious about art history, “ said art teacher Beverly Cordova. “This was his first canvas painting and I was very impressed. I hope to see him in another art class next year.”

Bolds, a Parkrose student since 8th grade, is enjoying his first art class. He seems a little surprised by his success. “I’m planning on going to Oregon State University to major in pharmacy,” the eleventh grader explains. Bolds, is the son of Ezekiel and Lavoria “Elle” Jones of Parkrose.

A team from Cordova’s Basic Design Class ran away with the award for Best 3-D work by freshmen. The ninth graders’ mixed media tower drew praise from judges. Team members included Matt Barrer, Ressia Bliss, Sarah Bowen, Amanda Curtman, Jody Harding, Nam Lee, Tyler Moore, Susan Neumann, Yen Nguyen, Diana Reynolds, and Jeremy Shoopman.

Woman of the year
The Woman of the Year at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St., was honored on Tuesday, May 11, during a program featuring music and a puppet show.

Elizabeth Webber, the 2003 honoree, introduced Lynn Vosgeir. She was presented with a pin, a certificate and a flower arrangement to commemorate the occasion.

Vosgeir was born in Iowa, the sixth of seven children. After moving to Oregon she first found work as an Arthur Murray dance instructor, then found her niche as a hairdresser, serving clients for 42 years.

As a member of the church she has held many positions, including Organizer for Discovering Portland, Chair of Membership and Evangelism. She has been chair of the church’s booth at the Community Fair sponsored by the Gateway Area Business Association, and the Parkrose Community Fair. Vosgeir has also worked on the churches’ Fall Festival for the last two years, helping provide music, dancing, games and entertaining for all ages in the Parkrose community.

Neighborhood Involvement’s 30th birthday
Officially sanctioned citizen involvement in Portland turns 30 this year.

That’s when what was then called the Office of Neighborhood Associations came into being. There will be a 30th birthday party to mark the occasion starting at noon June 19 at City Hall, 1221 S.W. 4th Ave.

There will be a short speech by mayor Vera Katz, a recognition of past and present community leaders by Office of Neighborhood Involvement director Jimmy Brown, music, games, booths and a cake or two. Join in the fun to commemorate the beginning.

Leaders wanted
Parkrose High School’s Site Council, the leadership group that develops and implements the annual School Improvement Plan is now accepting membership applications from parents and other community members. Bruce Feathers, father of three Parkrose students, completes his three-year term in June. Principal Roy Reynolds says that many of the innovations at the high school can be traced to the work of past Site Councils. “The current emphasis on rigor, relevance and relationships is because of the vision developed by the Council. Bruce has been an important part of the reform effort, so we know that parent voices and opinions are vital to our improvement process.”

The twelve member Council, which includes students, staff, teachers and parents, meets twice per month. Applications are available at the high school office, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. and are due on Monday, June 7. To request an application, call Meg Kilmer, Site Council Chair, at 503-408-2681.
