HEATHER HILL THE MID-COUNTY MEMO
With most modern parents juggling work schedules, budgets, transportation and safety concerns, One can easily predict why many Mid-county children spend the sunny days of summer closed up inside staring at glowing screens and eating too much snack food. Teachers say that kids can easily forget the lessons instilled during the school year if not intellectually challenged over the summer, and parents can confirm that, without enough physical activity, kids can become cranky. Many programs have arisen to fill time and activity gaps, but how do you find the One that best suits your budget and schedule? Continuing our commitment to inform Mid-county residents of events and opportunities, the Memo has compiled the following Summer Fun Guide for your reference. Whether you seek to unleash the young Ones on a week-long adventure camp, or just want to know the availability of the nearest public pool, the Summer Fun Guide has the go-to info on your options. And there's even more beyond these pages! A wealth of summer events and camp options take place throughout greater Portland for those willing to travel the distance. Activities also abound through private enterprises in the many fields your children may have shown interest in. If your child has participated in sports, dance, or other recreational activities through school, you may find clubs and classes available for a wide variety of specific interests. We apologize that we could not include every opportunity here due to space concerns. We have also omitted activities specifically geared toward toddlers and children younger than school age for which every day is summer! The following listing is comprised of the advertised opportunities available at the time of publication; please contact the provider directly for current availability. Camps and Classes Camps today do not necessarily involve trees. Community centers, sports clubs, and other non-profit organizations offer a wide variety of camps and classes to keep your kids occupied for weeks at a time. Most camps and classes are One to two weeks in length. Some camps entertain the entire day, but many break into morning or afternoon camps with the option to take both for a reduced fee. Most also offer early drop-off and late pick-up childcare, but expect to pay for the luxury. Also, ask about scholarship options - many provide a discount for kids who qualify for Free or reduced lunch. All of the following listings require advanced registration, but many openings existed at press time. See the next section for drop-in activities.
